To azz whom may mam.; y i
Be it known that I, ERNEST' RIPACKEm/a citizen of the United States, residingat Sid- 'naw, in the county of'ilv'loughton'f'and @State I of' Michigan, have invel'ited certain new Vand useful Improvements fin Railroad-Ties, of
whichy the following isa 'spe `:iicatio``1.V
' This invention lsarallroad l,tie and has ,for its principal object the production of a device which will positively h'oid thefrails against spreading when injuse without the employment of 'spikesor like securing means...
Another' object of"this'. invention is the productionv cfa railroad tie which' consists ofy achann'eled bodyprovidedwith ya top plate togetherwith securing means for'the" topv plate, whereby the rail'sfplace'dl in en# gagementl with theftie will'hbe firmly' sup? ported andwillbe held againstlany tendencyof sidedisplacement. y i
Another object 'of 4 this invention 1s the production of a rrailroad tiey wherein the' top platef'is vprovided withf supporting blocks at its ends, for relieving part of the supporting strain from therchanneled body, while the clips arecarried upon the top plate for engaging the `rail and holding the same against displacement.. y
assembly rof the present invention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a 'top plan view of the railroad tie, illustrating the manner in which the rails are connected thereto.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the tie, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
In Ithe preferred embodiment 0f the present invention, about to be described, it will be seen that the tie comprises a channeled body which includes a base 5 having parallel side walls 6. This body may be of substantially the same size as the ordinaryv tie now in use and it is obvious that this body may be made of any desired material, without departing from the spirit of the present in-l vention. By the construction thus disclosed, it will be seen that the body is substantially U-shaped in cross section, as illustrated in F ig. 3.
The top plate 7 is substantially the same length as the body and is narrow to fit between the side walls 6, as shown in the several igures of the drawing. In` order y. v Speciicationof Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 3, 191.78, Appiimitpan1a1ni1yf24.191e.` serial No. 246,568.
to support `this I'top plate 7 at a distance' slightly below the top edges of the top walls,
blocks 8 are Xed to the under surface of` the top plate 7 and engage the basev ofl ,the body, thus supporting the plate A7, v as'illusfv trated in Figs. 2 and 3. It'willbenot'ed that these blocks are carried at .the ends ofv the body and engage the side walls, lthus providing a narrow space through-the,tiev which will allow air to` freely circulate have gripping iianges 11 upon theirinner-l ends, it being noted that these clipsy 10 are held in set position upon the top plate 7 by the bolts`12 extending throughv the rtop plate and also through the clip, as illustrated 9 clearly in Figs. 2 and 3.
An adjustable clip 13 also rests upon the top plate 7 and alsoV has a2 longitudinal slot 14v therein and is This clip 13 is held in an adjusted position by the bolt 16 passing through the top plate 7 and also through the slot 141.2v Therefore,a;
One practical forin or"construction` Aandslx rai-l 17-may be interposed between the fixed and adjustable clips, as illustrated clearly vin Fig. 2 it being noted that the base of the rail will it under the iiange 15 and then the flange 15 of the adjustable clip 13 may be slipped over the base of the rail and the provided/with a flange 15.
bolt 16 adjusted for holding the same in adjusted position. It should be noted that the side walls 6 of the base are provided with alined notches 18 to allow the railsto pass therethrough and also rest upon the top surface of the top plate 7.
When the device is in use, the body is placed upon a road bed and then the top plate, provided with the clips secured as ereinbefore specified is placed upon the body and bolted in engagement therewith to hold the body against displacement. VAt.
this time7 the rails may be placed upon the tie, by extending through the notches 18 andl also resting upon the top surface of the plate 7. The clips will then be engaged with the base of the rails, as hereinbefore specified, thus fixing the rails in set position and preventing accidental spreading of the same when in use. It will be noted that the notches will tend to hold the rails against any tendency of spreading, while the Inannerin which the clipslare-engaged with the rail and with the top 7 the manner in which the plate is supportedbelow the top edges of the side walls 6 will hold the rails within the notches and for this reason the rails will v be positively held against accidental spreadarrangement and combination of parts, inaa e, terials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and-fall within the scope ofthe appended claims.' y l v i Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is
1.",In a device of the character described, the combination of .a body consisting ot la base lhaving parallel walls, said ivallshavf.k ing notches in their top edges, a plate interposed between said side walls, blocks carried by said plate and engaging said base, thus supporting saidy plate, means` passing through said walls, for holding the plate againstaccidental shifting, and means carriedgby said plate for engaging rails for holding the' same within said notches, thus holding the same against spreading.
2, In a device of thecharacter described, the combination of'a body consisting .of a
base having parallelwalls, said walls having notches in their tp edges, a plate interposed' between said side walls, blocks carried bysaid plate and engaging said base, thus supporting said plate, and means carried by said plate "for engaging rails, for holding the same within said notches, thus holding the rails against spreading. l
I -f3. In la device of the character described,
the combination 'of a body consistingfo'fa basehaving parallel walls, said walls havingnotches in' theirl top edges, a plate interposed between said walls, blocks carried lr' said plates` and engaging said base thus supporting the said plate adjacent the topedges of said walls, the upper s'i'irface of said plate being in alineinent with the surface of said notches, meanspassing through said lplate for holding the saine against accidentalv shifting and means 'carriedvby said plate for engaging rails for holding the same within said notches, thns holding therails against spreading.
4. In a device of the characterdescribed,
the combination of a body consisting of a base having parallel walls, `a plate intera posed between said walls, blocks carried by said plate and engaging said base, thus supporting saidv plate, means passing through said walls for holdingthe plate against accidental shifting, and rail engaging means carried by said plate.'
in presence of two witnesses.
