To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN N. BATTISTA, a

subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification. i

This invention relates to an improvement in shoes, and the object is to provide a novel construction in the top or upper of a shoe, and particularly adaptable to shoes having high tops or uppers.

A further object resides in themethod or shoe so that a neat appearanceis presented and causing the upper to fit snugly about the leg of the wearer.

The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a shoe showing the invention;

Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the shoe open at the top; and,

Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view disclosing the manner of fastening the top or upper portion of the shoe.

In the drawing, the shoe is designated A and the inner section of the upper as 1, and

i the outer section of the upper as 2. The

forward or front edges of the upper sec tions are fastened together by suitable stitching.

The outer section of the upper is formed in two parts, an upper and lower portion 3 and 4;, respectlvely. The lower portion is shown as divided throughout its length and provided with suitable eyelets. 5 for the reception of a lacing 6 for drawing the two sections of the upper together around the instep and ankle of the foot.

The inner section]. of the upper. and the lower portion 4 of the outer section are stitched together at the back of the shoe, and covering the seam formed is a strip 7.

The strip 7 extends the full length of the upper and is stitched to the uppermost portion of the inner section 1. Attached to the inner face of the back strip 7 in a suitable manner, is a vertical row of studs 8.

The upper portion 3 of the outer section l are adapted to receive the studs 8 for fastenmanner of fastening the top portion of the ing-the upper portion 3 of the upper to the back strip.

When the back strip 7 is fastened to the upper portion 3 an appearance is presented indicating that the upper portion is rigidly secured thereto, as the fastening means is en-- tirelyconcealed. By this method of fasten- 111g the upper or top portion of the shoe will be drawn tightly around the leg or limb of 1 i means for fastening the rear edge of the l upper portion of the outer section to the rear edge of the inner section.

2. A shoe comprising an upper consisting of two sections connected together along their front edges, one oft'he sections having upper and lower portions, the lower portion being connected at its rear edge to the rear edge of the full section, a back strip extending the length of the upper and connected to the full section and the lower portion of the other section, and detachable means for fastening the rear edge of the upper portion of the section to the back strip.
