Be it known that l, HARRY D. ROHMAN, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at lleW York city, county of NewA Yorlr, and State of New York, TUnited States of America, have invented certain new and useful linprovemen-ts in Output-indicators, or" which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in output indicators, and has reference primarily to an output indicator for use on dynamos of the slipping belt type, as employed in electric train lighting, heating and ventilating systems.

The dynamo is driven from the axle 11 by means of the pulley 12, belt 13 and pulley 1a, the pulley 14 being mounted on the shaft 15 ot the dynamo. Since the linlt is pivoted to tue bradlret AJ 2, and the dynamo, it will be clear that the dynamo, or at least part oit 4the load of the dynamo. is carried on the belt 13. Stated in other words, the dynamo lies in the belt, the pull or the belt being primarily detern mined by the degree or1 angularity of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. Gefe dynamo. The angularity of the dynamo maybe altered by the threaded rod 16 which is pivoted at one end to the link and passes through the bracket 17 mounted in the framing 8.
liet us assume for purposes of illustration that the dynamo should have an output of 900 watts in order to properly supply the consuming circuits of the car to which it is attached, and also. to charge they batteries, the dynamo being constructed to generate ampere at 30volts, at, let us say, 1,000 revolutions per minute. The dynamo is adjusted so that the belt 13 will slip on the pulley 14 when the desired amperage is obtained, the output thereafter remaining constant except` of course, when the speed of 'the train falls below a predetermined rate. The adjustment. is effected through the rod 16 and link 10, the size of the pulleys and the friction of thebelualso being factors to be considered in securing the desired output.

Although a variety of 'diii'erent forms of indicating mechanism can be employed in carryingr out my inventionfl prefer to use an indicator A of the spirit level type,'which, in order to secure a wider, and more accurate range of readings, should preferably' be curved. The glass 18 oi the level is mounted in a suitable metal housing1 19, which may be attached to any convenient part of the dynamo` as for eX# ample, the terminal block 20. passing through slots 22 in the base 23 of the housing 'or a purpose which Will appear. rifhe scale dn the glass is obtained from a master indicator which has been calibrated to give accurate ampere readings on standard dynamos, pulleys and belting. It will at once be seen that the indicator will give approximately correct ampere output readings for the various degrees o angularity of the dynamo; that a dynamo can be readily adjusted to give the desired output when first installed Without any-additional testing or readings; and that the output can from time to time be corrected oradjusted as needed.
The indicator also lends itself readily to adjustment. This may be. required in such cases as where a belt is replaced by one made ot' `some material other 'than standard material. or wherea pulley is replaced by one of difi'erent size.. Vnder such altered conditions, the indicator would not give correct readings. and would require readj'ustment, this being` :wcomplished by looseningr the Screws or studs 2l, and shifting' the position of the level. rThis may be done in connection with the gage device shown and described in my cil-pending application., Serial No. ($4.457, tiled December l. i915. This gage device is adapted to be applied to the dynamo shaft and is calibrated to rive the outputy reading' at which the belt slips. When the output has been determined b v the gage, the level is shifted until the bubble is at ay corresponding reai'ling, after which the screws are tightened.
While l have described my invention as applied to a constant torque d vmano oif the slipping' belt type. it will be understood that it is not restricted to auch use` and that variations may be made without departing` from the spirit ofthe invention.
I claim:
1. The combination ot a belt-driven constant torque dynamo. means whereby the dynamo is partly supported in the beit,n1eans for adjustingr the position or the dynamo to alter its load on the belt. and indicator nie-cir' anism controlled by the position oi' the dynamo for translating such position vinto a readingA of the output of the dynamo.
:2. rEhe combination of a constant torque dynamo, means whereby the dynamo iS swingingly supported, a belt for driving said dynamo. part ot' the load of the dynamo Abeing; carried in the belt, the point of the Slippage of the belt beine determined by the angularity of the dynamo with respect to a verticai line passing' through its point of support, and indicator mechanism controlled bythe angular position of the dynamo for translating such position into a reading of puts. movable means `for altering the driving eli'ort ot' the driving member to set a new maximum dynamo output. and means oper- -ated by the movement of saidrst means for indicating the output oi the dynamo.
