AEPARATUS FOR TRANSPORTING VOLATILE LIQUIDS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A MoN Du HEATH, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Fort -Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Transporting Volatile Liquids,
' of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for transporting volatile liquid, intended especially for handling materials such as carbon bisulfid, sulfuric ether, benzene, naphtha, gasolene, etc. The object of the invention is to provide means in connection with a cask or tank for closing the opening therein through which the same is charged for the purpose of shipment, and
also to provide means for efiecting the disshowing a ortion of the shell of the cask,
the valve or closing same and appurtenances used during transportation; and
Fig. 2 is a similar view with appurtenances used in discharging the contents of the cask.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views and referring now to the same:
(1) is a cylindrical cask or drum of the type ordinarily used for the shipment of liquid. (2) is an opening in the shell of the cask, and (3) is an internally threaded collar that is riveted to the shell about the opening. (a) is a nipple having screw threaded relation with the collar, and having also a central (6) of a valve (7) t at seats upon the upper end of the nipple. A spring (8) is interposed between the guide and a washer (9) on the valve-stem, the latterbeing retained upon the stem by a in (10) which is inserted in the latter. he expansive force of the spring is intended to hold the valve normally in closed osition so that the contents of the cask will e retained therein.
The nipple (4) has an externally threaded flange (11) upon which is secured a cap (12) for closing the nipple at the outer end thereof, the cap having a central. recess (13) Specification of Letters Patent.
ide (5) for the stem in its inner face that afl'ords clearance for the lower end of the valve-stem.
With the construction thus described the cask with its contents'is transported Without liability of displacement of the valve and consequent leakage.
Tn constructing the device it is the intention that the collar shall be closely fitted to the cask and that the nip le shall likewise'be fitted in the collar, an also the valve is seated closely so that unintended outward passage of fluid from within the desk through the nipple will be prevented;
As a. means for removing the contents of the cask, a discharge pipe (14) is provided with an external flange (15) that is en- Tgaged by a collar (16) which is threaded or connection with the. nipple upon the flange (11), there being provided packing rings (17) and (18) placed respectively upon the upper and lower faces of the flange (15) for forming close connections between the flange and nipple and the flange and collar when the pipe is positioned for use. At the upperv end of the pipe is a cross-arm (19) having a central upwardly projecting lug (20) thereon arranged in alinement with the valve-stem so that ,when the ipe is attached in connection with the nipp e, and the collar (16) is screwed onto the nipple, the lug will contact and raise the valve-stem, thus lifting the valve so that the contents of the cask will flow gravitally from the cask through the nipple and discharge pipe, the attachment of the latter to the nipple resulting in the opening of the valve as the lug (20) is raised against the lower end of the valve-stem during the connection of the discharge pipe.
With the appliance thus disclosed volatile liquids may be hermetically sealed within the cask and transported, and may be withdrawn from the cask without atmospheric interference and conveyed therefrom to other storage points or for use as may be desired.
The pipe (14) when applied to the nipple Patented Dec. 3, Tllld. application filed May 18, 1918. Serial No. same.
lllll ashereinbefore set forth may also be ernher adapted for connection with the valve outlet of the cask and for opening the valve when applied thereto. The cap for sealing the outer end of the nipple, and the discharge member are interchangeable and are to be applied accordingly as occasion requires.
What I claim is A shipping-cask having a discharge opening therein, a nipple fitted in the o ening, the upper end of which is flush with the opening, a spring-pressed valve seated upon the inner end of the nipple and having an outwardly extending stem, a discharge pipe having a flange adapted to seat against the outer end of the nipple and having also a central projecting lug adapted to bear directly against the valve-stem, and a collar adapted to engage the flange of the discharge pipe and the nipple.
In testlmony whereof I afii'x my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
