TRACK SANDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 16,1913.

lation of sand. to form a sand .cushion as described-in my, prior Patent No. 811,144:v
therair discharge nozzle 25 havingpassages 26 and 27 therethrough. The rear face of p the nozzle is slotted as shown at 28so that it may be turnedby a screw driver when it is desired to remove it. A cleanout plug. is provided'at29 lby means of which the opening into theairchamberf23is opened to permit the removal of the air discharge nozzle 2 5 or to permit thechamber 23 to be blown oiit. By this construction itis never necessary to remove the air nozzle to cleanit.
This is a great advantage because if the-nozz'le is jremovedthe sand will" at once flow into the opening from which the nozzle was removed and will make the restoration of the nozzleinearly impossible'unless the sand boxis emptied of sand and the interior of the sander. cleaned;
At 19' is shown a clean out plug located directly below the inlet opening 14. By removing this plug any accumulation of stones, roots or the like may be easily removed.
In theoperation of the sander, sand is discharged by gravity throu'gh the passage 13 directly into the said discharge'pipe' 16, the-flow of sand being controlled by the sand valve'located in j the sand box and not shown iiithe" drawings. Whenvth'e sand is discharged byair'pressure' as is the'ordinary method, it enters from the sandgbody through the" passages 18 and 14 and is then impelled by 'compressed'air' from the nozzle 25 on a substantially horizontal ,line in the general direction ofthe' plug 20. Thence itjescap'es through the discharge pipe 16 to the rails. 1
What we claim is: l
1: In combination with a sandbox having a boss through which are twopassa'ges one forthe discharge of sand by gravity and the otherirfor'discharge of sand by compressed air, a'hody secured to said boss and having co ies of this patentmay heobtainerl vfor two passages resgistering with the two passages in the said boss, a common discharge opening in the. body, a transverse passage connecting with the saidcoi'nmon discharge opening, said common discharge opening being directly in line with the gravity discharge opening in the boss, and an air discharge nozzle located near the junction of the connecting air passage and the air inlet sand passage, the discharge end of the transverse passage being at least as low as the air discharge nozzle.
2. In combination with a sand box having a boss through which are two passages one in front of the other, the forward passage being for the discharge of sand by gravityand the otherbeing for the discharge of 'sand by compressed air, a body secured to said boss'and having two passages register-' ing with the two passages of the boss and uniting-in a common discharge opening arranged directly in line with the forward passage in the said boss there being in the said-"body apassage inclined downwardly slightly connecting the rear inlet passage with the front inlet passage and an air nozzle located near the junction of said inclined passage with the rear inlet passage.
3. Incombination with a sand box having a bossthrough which are two passages one for the discharge of sand by gravity and the other for the discharge of sand by compressed air, a body'secured to said boss and having two passages'regist'ering with the two passages in the said boss, the passage in thebody which connects with the air sand discharge passage in the boss'sloping away from the gravity'passage' in'tlie body, a transverse passage which slopes slightly downwardly connecting the two passages in said body. there being a common discharge opening directly in line with the gravitydischarge opening in the boss, and-an air dis charge nozzle located above the junction of the transverse passage and the discharge pipe.
In testimony whereof'we afiix our signatures'.
