EDWARD T. CLARK AND EDWARD O. ERICSON, OF AKRON, OHIO.
ELECTRIG LIGHT HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
Application filedJanuary 2c, 1918. Serial No. 218,960.
To all whom z't-mag concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD and EDWARD O. EmcsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new andmseful Improvements in Electric-Light Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to handles for portable lights and aims to provide a handle which is easily applied and secured against accidental displacement and which will profrom shocks.
A' further object is to provide a flexible handle which will insure a perfect grip and likewise prevent changin of the wire insulation, thus guarding agalnst breaking of the wires.
For the accomplishment of the above and other objects which will appear when the following description is read, the invention includes a flexible rubber tube adapted to receive the conductor wires of the lam the tube being formed with an enlarge end capable of being stretched and tightly fitted over a lamp socket. The tube is further provided with a slot for the passage of the switch button, the free end 0 the enlarged portion being secured upon the socket by means of a clam which may form part of a wire guard with which these lamps are usually e nipped.
In the I'awings:-
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention shown applied.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, the socket and lamp being shown in elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the enlarged end of the handle.
The invention is shown as applied to a lamp socket of ordinary construction, the said socket being indicated at 10 and having connected therewith a bulb 11.
The handle which comprises the subject matter of the present invention is preferably formed of flexible rubber and includes a T. CLARK apparent.
tubular grip portion 12- provided at one end with an enlarged elastic portion 13. The tubular portion 12 is adapted'to form a handle and receives the conductor wires 14, while the enlarged elastic portion 13 is adapted to receive the socket 10, its elasticity permitting it to closely fit the socket and to adapt itself to sockets of different makes. The enlarged portion 13 is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 15 which 1s adapted to receive the switch button 16,
the shank of the button projecting through 5 its slot as shown. 1 I
The handle is secured in'position by a suitable clamp extending around the enlarged portion in a manner to securely hold the same upon the socket. Any suitable clamp may be employed for this purpose, but
it is preferred to utilize the one shown. It consists of the clamp 17 which is carried by a wire lamp guard 18 of the kind usually employed for the protection of the bulb. This provides a simple and efficient means of securing the handle and guard in position. as lamps of this character are seldom used without a guard.
It is believed that when the foregoing description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings. that the construction and advantages of the invention will be The right is reserved to make such changes in the ,form and proportion thereof as will fall within the scope of the claim thereto appended. For example, the tubular portion 12 may be made of a harder rubber than that part which slips over the socket and may also be employed with its surface roughened to provide a better guard. Also the slot 15 may extend to the end of the enlarged portion 13, or it may be closed at this end as shown in the drawings, this latter form of slot being preferable. It is also obvious that some suitable portion may be substituted for rubber, the'basic idea being to provide a handle which may be easily secured upon the socket for the purpose to provide a manner for handling the lamp and at the same time to protect the insulation of the conductor wires.
Having described the invention, what is claimed 1s:-
The combination with an electric lamp,
of a flexible tubular handle formed of rubover the enlarged portion for securing the her and adapted to inclose the conductor handle in position.
wire, an enlarged extensible portion located In testimony whereof we afix our sia- 10 at one end of the tubular handle for stretchtures.
ing over the socket of the lamp and provided v with a slot for the passage of the lamp EDWD T. CLARK switch handle and a clamp for engagement EDWARD O. ERICSON.
