DRIVING AND REVERSING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed February 29, 1916. Serial No. 81,286.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .MALCOLM /VALKER, a British subject, residing at city of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving and Reversing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to driving and reversing apparatus applicable for planing machines and other machine tools with a reciprocating table and which may be applied to other machines where a direct and reverse drive are required.
This invention is designed to provide an intermediate mechanical connection between the armature of the magnetic clutches and the shaft and a static brake whereby the shaft may be brought to a standstill when the table of the machine reaches the end of or overruns its traverse. It consists in the particular disposition and arrangement of the parts comprising a pair of annular magnetic clutches rotated in opposite directions with disk or annular armatures and a driven disk or block affixed to the driven shaft with which the armatures are mechanically connected preferably by a spring or resilient cgnraection and to which a brake may. be app ie The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1. is an elevation showing the .invention applied to the table of a planing machine.
Fig. 2. is a longitudinal section through the clutch.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the brush and slip rings.
Fig. 3. is a transverse sectional elevation through the driven disk or block D.
Fig. 4. is a sectional view of the driven disk or block and the brake.
Fig. 5. is a horizontal section taken through the driven disk or block.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the machine parts in broken line representation.
Fig. is a diagrammatic view of the electrical circuits.
On the driving shaft A of the machine two magnetic clutches B and B are loosely mounted and free to rotate thereon. The periphery of the driving member of each of these clutches is formed either as a pulley or with teeth and these member of the clutches are continuously driven in opposite directions by a belt such as G or a pinion such as a. The armatures or driven members I) b of these clutches are loosely mounted on the driving shaft A are disposed thereon adjacent to one another and a driving disk or block D is placed between them. The driving disk or block is made fast by a key at or otherwise to the shaft A and is mechanically connected to the armatures or driven members 5 b of the clutches. The connection between the clutch members I; b and the block D may be either rigid or flexible preferably the latter, springs or buffers cl being interposed between lugs (l on the ldisk or block and lugs b on the clutch memers.
In the particular construction shown the driven clutch members or armatures b b are mounted to rotate upon the bosses (Z of the driving disk or block D and this is preferably made of non-magnetic material to insulate the clutches from one another so that the energizing of one clutch may not affect the other.
A brake G is applied to the driving disk or block D to be applied electrically at the end of each traverse of the planing machine table E to act as an emergency brake to be applied on failure of the electric current to act to prevent the table E overrunning-its traverse in either direction. The brake G is applied by a lever g operated by a magnetic solenoid H or other electrical or mechanical device.
The driving disk or block D is preferably constructed with a number of abutments or lugs to engage the driven members I) b of the clutches. The abutment d may be formed by inserting plates across an annular groove between two ring flanges (Z on each face of the disk D into the recesses between which lugs or studs 6 on the clutch members project, a butler spring d being in- 'serted between them to give an elastic or cushion drive.
The magnetic clutches B B may be of any convenient form of high efficiency but at present we prefer clutches the driving members formed, each of an annular electromagnet 6 with the magnetic coil 6 fitted into an annular recess b in the face and a hollow central cone b, and the driven member or annular armature with a friction cone b projecting from the face to engage the .hollow cone of the magnet. The cone or cones are preferably faced with a friction material 11 such as vulcanized fiber.
A spring I) is preferably inserted between the members of each clutch to separate them and the coil is connected to any convenient source of electricity by a suitable device diametrically illustrated as at F.
The two electromagneti members of the clutches are, when the machine is in operation, continuously driven in opposite directions by belting C, gearing c, or otherwise either applied to their peripheries which mayact as pulleys orwheels or they may have pulleysor wheels attached to them, the gearing shaft A being geared to the table E of; a planing machineor to any other machine-by gearing in the ordinary way.
A switch for transferring the current from one clutch tothe other is of any convenient form operated or moved at the end of each traverse. of the table E by dogs orprojections, thereon. The. preferred form of this switch is shown by Figs. 6- and 7, and the structure and operation thereof will; now be described. When the clutch B is energized, the switch arm S is in the left-hand position and makes contact with the plate 3? connected to the, positive. of the source of supply and with the plate or terminal 39" connected with the resistance r, the latter being; connectedto the winding of the clutch B. At the point of reversing traverse, however, the switch arm is-moved intocontact with the terminal 19 thereby cutting out the resistance 91-; The operation on the right-hand sideof' the switch connected to the clutch B" through. the resistance r is similar to that just explained, except that the switch arm is moved overto engage the plate or terminal 29 to throw inthe resistance r and theourrentfrom the source of supply, but at the point of reversing traverse, the arm is moved to eng ge the terminal 19* to out out the resistance 1*.
