Description

J. T. RADCLIFFE.
VALVE.
. APPLICATION FILED }AN-22| IQII- 1,286,098. Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
wum Ho's JOHN T. RADCLIFFE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 26, 1918.
Application filed January 22, 1917. Serial No. 143,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. RADCLIFFE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in'the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to valves.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a double acting valve especially adapted for use in connection with a gas water heater, wherein it is desired to have the pressure of the water that is used to actuate the supply of gas to automatically regulate the heat generated and thus operate the other valve.
Another object of my invention is to provide a valve of the class described having means associated with the water inlet valve to regulate the pressure necessary to operate the same and thus automatically open the second valve upon the establishment of the predetermined pressure.
Other and further improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the description to follow, which, for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part hereof and wherein preferred embodiments of the invention are shown for the purpose of illustration.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention with part of the casing thereof removed;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a forked arm used in conjunction with my invention, and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a drum used to operate the valve.
With more particular reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, a body or casing designated 1 is provided with a pair of recessed chambers formed in one side thereof and designated 2 and 3 respectively. A partition member 4: formed integral with the body separates the said chambers. Centrally of the partition member a substantially circular aperture is formed therein for a purpose which will hereinafter be fully described.
Diagonally opposite ends of said body portion at the ends of the chambers are provided enlarged heads 5 and 6 forming outlet means for the gas and water respectively. On the opposite ends of said chambers I provide neck portions designated 7 and 8 forming inlet means for the gas and water respectively. The said necks are provided with enlarged head portions 9 and 10 forming the necessary pipe joint. Adjacent the jointure of the neck member 8 with the chamber 3 I provide a circular flange 11 having the outer periphery thereof threaded to receive a valve seat 12. At the jointure of the neck member 7 and the chamber 2 a valve seat 13 has a threaded engagement. Adjacent the outlet means of the chambers 2 and 3 I provide guiding disks 14 and 15 in threaded engagement with the said enlarged heads. It is to be understood that the valve seat and guiding disks are merely frame members and thus water or gas is permitted to flow freely through the same. The said disks and valve seats are provided with apertures centrally thereof to receive stems 16 and 17. The stem 16 is provided with a valve member 18 mounted adjacent one end thereof and adapted to engage the valve seat 13. The reciprocating valve members 18 and 19 securely engage the valve stems 16 and 17 thus permitting their adjustment to regulate the force of water necessary to unseat the same.
The stem member 17 is provided with a reciprocating valve 19 adjacent the valve seat 11 and adapted to engage the same. Mounted on the flange 11 I provide a sleeve member 20 adapted to receive and form a casing for a spring member 21. One end of the said spring is rigidly secured to the casing and the opposite end being secured to the stem 17 thus by engaging the said end at different points on the stem, a clifferent pressure upon the valve 19 will be rmglired to open the same.
n the stem 16 a spring member 22 is secured as at 23. and the opposite end 24: thereof is secured to the casing of the body 1. In the aforementioned aperture provided in the partition 4 a rotatable drum member 25 is provided having a pair of arms designated 26 and 27 extending from diametrically opposite points thereon. The ends of the said arms are provided with forked members 28 and 29 for engagement with lugs 30 and 31 formed on the stems 16 and 17.
A cover plate 32 is secured to the body of the said valve by means of screw members 33. plate provides means for gaining ready access to the interior of the valve structure.
In use the operation of my invention is as follows: first, the spring member 21 is regulated to maintain the desired pressure of the valve member 19 against the valve seat 11 after which the same is ready for operation. Upon the entrance of the water into theinlet chamber 8 the valve member 19 is forced upwardly, the lug member engaging the forked section 28 causes the arm 26 to engage the lug member 31 and thus force the valve 18 open permitting an additional supply of gas to come into the inlet pipe therefor and thus increase the heating power of the same.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it
can be easily seen that I have provided a valve that is simple in construction, contain? ing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.
It is of course obvious that this cover-- It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawing comprehend only the general embodiments of my invention and that various minor changes in detail and construction of the various parts of the valve also in the proportions and arrangement of parts may be made withinithe scopeof the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
I claim:: y

In testimony whereoi' I, afhx my slgnature hereto.
JOHN T.- RADOLIFFE.
