To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID WV. HOWELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Shellman, in the county of Randolph and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Peanut-Shellers; and I vdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in peanut shelling machine and consists of a simple and efiicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view through the machine.

ings, it will be noted that the inner walls of the casing are provided with curved recesses or arcuate grooves 22' and in which recesses the ends of the cross bars 22 are mounted loosely. Each of said bars has a metallic plate 23 secured to its inner edge by screws or otherwise, as shown clearly in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings. Said plates which have their faces in planes at angles to each other have interposed between same, adjustable wedges 2% which engage recesses in the edges of plates 23. Rod 28 are fastened one to the plate 23 and another in alinement thereto secured to the adjacent wedge 24, and a coiled spring 27 fits over said bars and bears intermediate said plate 23 and the ad- .jacent wedge 24. Said spring should be of sufiicient strength so that its tension will hold by pressure the different plates 22 when wedges are interposed between the same in different adjusted positions.
Intermediate the lower portions of the inclined walls 22 is an exit opening 22 leading into a passageway 10, which latter leads to the fan chamber 8 in which the fan 9 is mounted upon a shaft 8. The said passageway also communicates with a passageway 11 which leads to the receptacle 12 into which shells and foreign matter are forced by the draft from the fan. A belt 6 passes over a pulley 7 upon the shaft 8 and also over a pulley 31 upon the shaft 3, affording means for driving the cylinder 4. A belt 25 passes about a pulley 26 upon the shaft 8 and also about the cylindrical screen 20. A pulley 3 is fastened to the end of the shaft 3 and is driven from any suitable source of power not shown.
In the bottom wall of the passageway 10 is a trough 13 and 15 designates a rod passing through the walls of said trough and upon which one end of the vibrating hopper 14: is mounted, the outer end being provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending exit pipe 19 leading into one end of the cylindrical screen. A rod 16 is pivotally mounted upon a pin 17 and has pivotal connection through the medium of the pin 16 with one end of the vibrating hopper, shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, and the free end of the rod 16 rests in the circumferentially grooved cam 17 shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and serves as a means for imparting a vibratory movement to the hopper 14: when the apparatus is in motion.
'23, the bars carrying the latter being adjustable in order to adapt the machine toshell peanuts of different sizes. As the shells and meats fall upon the inclined'walls 22* they will make exit through the opening 22 where the blast of air from the fan will cause the shells and any other foreign matter that may be contained therewith to be forced up through the inclined passageway 11 into the receptacle 12. The peanuts falling into the hopper 14 will'be deposited through the pipe 19 into the interior of the rotary screen 20, the mesh-work of which will be of sufficient size to permit the seconds and split meats to pass through where they may be caught in a suitable receptacle placed underneath, while the Whole meats will pass through and make exit through the end of the cylinder.
By the provision of an apparatus for shelling peanuts made in accordance with my invention, it will'be noted that the parts are made adjustable so as to permit peanuts of different sizes to beshelledfthe adjust- .different distances apart.
\Vhat I claim to be new is: i
A peanut sheller comprising a casing havingwalls the inner faces of which are provided with arcuate grooves, a series of bars with the ends mounted in said grooves and recessed plates securedto each bar, wedges movable in said recesses and interposed betweenthebars and'yielding means bearing against the series of bars and plates to hold same in different adjusted positions, a shaft journal in the casing and a cylinder rotating with the shaft and having bars adapted to cooperate with said plates or separating for breaking the shells of peanuts.
