W. T. WHEELER. COMBINATION TOOL. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 21, 1911.

COMBINATION-TOOL.
Application filed February 21, 1917.
used by artisans so that the back edges of the saw blade and the handle therefor may be manipulated for measuring and determining angles without the use of the ordinary square and protractor commonly employed for this purpose.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an ordinary hand saw with a handle that will be rotatable instead of fixedly mounted to the saw blade and provided with means for fixing the movable handle at any desired angle with respect to the back edge of the saw blade.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a graduated disk associated with the pivot of the saw handle and adapted to cooperate with one edge of the handle for indicating the angular disposition of the handle when the same is moved on its pivot thereby providing a protractor for use in determining various angles.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a combination tool which consists of comparatively few parts and is si1nple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, part of the handle being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

sumes when the device is being used as a square, and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the pivot pin.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the saw blade 1 is of the type commonly employed in connection with hand saws. The end of the saw blade to which the handle is attached is curved to form a substantially semi-circular end edge and which is provided with a plurality of teeth 3. An aperture is provided in the saw blade at the center of the semi-circular end portion. The handle 2 is of the ordinary construction and is provided with a slot 3 in which the semi-circular endof the saw blade is arranged.
One end edge of the handle is provided with projections 4, the terminals of which are cut at right angles with respect to the a longitudinal edge of'the handle to provide the straight ends 4'. These straight ends 4, being in the same plane with each other, form one side of a right angle, the other side of which is formed by the edge 5 of the saw blade 1. These extensions also form a protection for the protractor hereinafter described.
Integrally formed with the handle 2 and extending from the edge thereof is a semicircular disk portion 6 which is bifurcated as'is the inner portion of the handle by the slot 3. The disk 6, therefore, is divided into two halves which embrace the saw as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing. Each side of the disk has a beveled edge 7 provided witha plurality of circumferentially spaced graduations forming a part of the protractor. An opening 8 is formed in the handle and the center of this opening is in registry with the straight forward edge 2v of the handle. Half of the opening is thereby formed in the handle and'the other half is formed in the semi-circular disk portion 6. A-pivotpin 9 is extended through theopening 8 and also. throughan opening formed in the saw blade 1 and each end of the pivot pin is cut away for forming oppositely-diswhich has an opening for receiving a suitable fastening screw for fastening the pivot. pin to the handle so that the pivot pin moves with the handle when ,the latter is turned and the pin thereby rotates inthe opening in the saw blade.
An opening 11 is provided in the handle a -0 m 2i9 s with-t e E25: 1 i le knocking'pin 12-is eX-tended through-"the opening 11 and has a head 13' for forming the locking pin to be withdrawn when unlocking the same. The opposite end of the locking pin engages the teeth 3 and isnormally held in engagement therewith bye coil spring 14:.
As shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing the device is in the position which it will assume when being used as a common hand saw. The locking pin 12 engages the teeth 3 and locks the handle against movement with respect to the saw blade. It is to be noted that the back edge of the handle is perfectly straight and forms a straight edge 15 which is a continuation of the straight edge 5 when the device is in this position. Now,
to change the device so the same may-be.
used as a square, it is merely necessary to release the locking pin 12 and rotate the handle until the straight edge 15 is disposed at right angles to the straight edge 5. It is to be noted that one wall 15 of the slot 3 is perfectly straight and at right angles to the straight edge 15. When this straight wall of the slot contacts with the edge 5, the straight edge 15 will be at a perfect right angle to the straight edge 5, and the locking pin may then be permitted to engage one of the teeth for holding the device in this position as clearly shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing. A short straight line 16 is provided on the saw blade in registry with the center of the disk 6 and the graduations of the disk will register with this line so that the handle may be turned to any desired angle indicated by the marked graduations on the beveled edge of the disk. This will indicate the angle at which the straight edge 15 is disposed with respect to the straight edge 5 and in this manner any angle may be measured in the same manner as is the case with the ordinary protractor.
When the device is being used as an ordinary hand saw, the projections 4 will protect the protractor disk 6 since it is obvious that when the saw is moving through a piece of work the projection will contact with the work if the saw is thrust too far forwardly thereby preventing contact with the disk 6. Furthermore, a straight line may be drawn by means of the edge 5' which will be" at right angles to the edge of any piece of work with which the projections 4 are embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended."
Iclaim: 1,. A;-tool""comprising' a blade having a handle'pivotally mounted on one end thereof, a semi-circular disk portion carried by the said handle,-the' said disk portion and the handle being bifurcated by a slot, the said blade being received in the slot whereby portions of the said disk are disposed on opposite sides of the blade, each side of the disk having a beveled. edge-provided with graduations, there being a short straight line provided on the blade to register withv any of the graduations on the said disk for indicating the angular portion of the handle when swung on its pivot.
2. A tool comprising a blade having a handle pivotally mounted on one end thereof, a semi-circular disk portion carried by the said handle, the said disk portion and the handle being bifurcated by a. slot, the said blade being received in the slot whereby portions of the said disk are disposed on opposite sides of the blade, each side ofthe disk having a beveled edge'provided with graduations, there being a short straight line provided on the blade to register with any of the graduations on the said disk for indicating the angular position of the handle when swung on its pivot, a pivot pin extending through the bladeand handle, each end of the pivot pin being formed with oppositely disposed semi-cylindrical portions each having an opening, and a fastening screw extended through the opening in the pin and attached to the handle whereby the said pin will rotate with the handle.
3. A combination tool comprising a handle, a blade carried by the handle and pivotally connected thereto, means for locking the handle in any desired angular position with respect to the blade, a protractor'attached to the handle for indicating the angular position thereof with'respect to the blade, and means carried by the handle for protecting the protractor when the blade is in use.
