To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND H. LUNKEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
' My invention relates to what is known as pocket windows in which a pocket is provided in the upper portion of the sash frame for the reception of the sash to give a free and unobstructed window opening. It is usual in pocket windows of the kind speciied to also provide for window screens which are located outside the sash and adapted to be also pushed up into the window pocket to obtain free access to the sash.

which by reason of the height of the framework, or for any-other cause, it is not practicable to provide a pocket to receive the full length of the sash. The invention also has relation to a construction in which pro-v vision shall be made in the sash frame for window screens, but in which the screens if desired mav be omitted or removed without expos-ing an air opening around the sash. It is the object, therefore, of my present invention to arrange a construction in which the'pockets for the window sash and for the screens shall be entirely independent of each other and s0 that whether screens are used or not, no air opening shall exist around the sash by reason of the pocket construction.
The invention consists of that novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically pointed out and claimed whereby this independence of the sash and screen pockets shall be obtained.

The stiles run to the top of the pocket above'the window opening and the head piece incloses the pocket at the top, while the front of the pocket is in the construction illustrated formed of corrugated sheet metal 12 for the plastering 13, and the outer wall ofthe pocket is inclosed by sheeting 14 over which the weatherboarding 15 for the outside structure in frame buildings is secured. The window casing is also provided with the usual inside and outside trims 16, 17. The' wall pocket, which in the construction illustrated is say, of only three-quarters depth, is divided by the partition 18 into two independent pockets, front and rear, of a sufficient horizontal depth to receive the two sashes and two screens respectively. These screens are preferably formedpf metal frames 19 for the lower, and 2O for the upper screen, with the wire screening 21 secured to the frames in any suitable way.v The lower screen is provided with a flanged strip 22 to engage over the lower rail of the upper screen, to form a close joint and to raise the upper screen when the two screens are pushed up into the pocket, while the upper rail of the upper screen is provided of double thickness as shown at Q3 to ll out the opening in the guide way.
The partition 18 completely divides the pocket, and the lower edge of the partition extends to the upper portion of the window opening, and this lower edge is provided with a U-shaped preferably metallic binding piece 24, which surface forms a contact piece for the weatherstrip 25, which is secured along the upper rail of the upper sash, and thus forms a tight weatherproof joint for the sash, and prevents the entrance of air around the sash through the window pocket. In addition this binding strip for the partition gives sufficient space between the partition and the parting bead for raising the upper sash into the pocket without binding.
