To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roeun'r JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Floresville, 'in the county of Wilson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Irn rovements in Tie-Tamping Devices, of wh1ch the followin is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful 1m rovements in a tie tamping device.
he object of the invention is' to provide a device of the character described particuiarly adapted to be used in the construction and repair of railroad tracks and more particularly for the purpose of tamping the ties of said track.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in theaccompanying drawings,

Referrin now more particularly to the drawings w erein like numerals of reference designate similar arts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 reFers to the frame work of the machine which is mounted upon suitable ounted upon the frame work are 3, 3 one'on each side, said connected by a suitable cross beam as 4, {LIN being strengthened by suitable cross braces as 5, thus' forming a supporting frame which is hinged at its forward end to the framework 1, and having its rear end free to move vertically. A truck 6 is coupled to the front end of the machine and is provided to support the motor 7. Upstanding from the front end of the frame work 1 is a beam 8 whose upper end carries a pulley 9 and a cable 10 is attached at one end to the cross beam 4 and passes over said pulley and its other end is wound around a wind ass 11 carried by the truck 6. By the use of this Windlass the A frame may be elevated and lowered, through the cable 10, for the purposes hereinafter set forth. A manuallever 12 is pivoted at its lower end to the rear end of the frame work 1 and is provided with a ratchet face 13 which the A frames A frames bein is normally held in engagement with the corresponding ratchet face, carried by the frame work, through the pull spring 14. The A frames are thus normally held against ver tical movement but when it is desired to clevate them, the ratchet teeth 13 may be disengaged by the manipulation of the lever 12 to permit their elevation, and the operative mechanism carried thereby. The lever 12 may be manipulated from the truck 6, through the rod 43, which is pivoted to the lower end of said lcver. Mounted in suitable bearings in said A frames are lhc transverse shafts 15, 1.5 one of which has the pulley 16 fixed thereon over which operates the belt 17 which is driven from the motor 7. Fixed upon the respective shafts are the intermcshing spur ear wheels 18, 18 through which rotation is imparted from one of said shafts to the other. Each of the shafts 15 is provided with a plurality of cranks 1!) ar ranged in staggered relation and pivoted to these cranks are the corresponding tamping rods 20 which operate through alincd bcarings :21 in the transverse bearing bars 12:2. 22. These rods :20 are jointcd near the shaft 15. arc spaced apart, and formed with shock ab sorbcrs 20' as clearly shown in Fig. l. At each end of the machine are the short transverse shafts '25, 25. which are rotatably mounted in suitable bearings. and one of which has the sprocket '26 fixed thereon, which is driven from the sprocket 1f), lixcd on the shaft 15, through the sprocket chain 27, and also has the pulley 28. fixed thereon, through which rotation is imparted to the other shaft. through a bolt 29. which opcrates on the pulley fixed on said last montioncd shaft. Fixed to the inner ends of these shafts 25 are the miter gears 31. 31 which are in mesh with corrcspomliug miter gears 32. 32, fixed upon the shirt lengthwise shafts 33. 33 which are rotatably mouutcd in suitable hearings carried by thc frame. These shafts 33 cach have the long cranks 34, 3-H. which are colmcctcd with the corresponding bearing bars 22. 22, through the conncctiug rods 35, 35. These rods are hinged at on end to the bearing bars 22, and their other ends have bearings which are sliduble upon the wrists 35 and as the shafts 33 rotate the bearing bars arc reend of the machine.

At each end this shaft has the oppositelyextending arms 37, and links 38, 38 are pivoted at one end'to the free ends of these arms and at their other to the respective bearings 23, 23. In operation the tamping rods are irecipro cated through the cranks of the shafts l5 and operate loosely through the beariggs 21. As is shown in Fig. 1 these tamping r s are arranged in series or sets one set operating on one side of the tie'and the other set operating on the other side and the shafts 15 are spaced a suilicient distance apart so that the tamping rods will converge downwardly toward each other and will operate to force the tamping material under and against the sides of the ties and firmly pack the same,
and the lowered ends of said tampin rods may1 be spread apart or brought close y to- :get or through the manipulation of the manual lever 40, as hereinbefore explained, in accordance with the width of the tie being ta-mped or the range of movement which it is desired to give to said rods.
