Be it known that l, lViLLiAM H Bnown, e. citizen of the United States, and it resident of Syracuse, in the countyof Onondaga and State of New York, have invented n certain new and useful Carriage{lpernting lilechn nism for Recording-llhchines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism for actuating the'oirriages of machines as recording machines, and has for its object o. particularly simple and eliicient means for successively tensioning the spring. and re turning the carriage to its starting position. The invention consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter setlforth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

I have here shown my invention as applied to the type of machine shown in my Patent No. 1,212,320, granted Jan. 16, 1917, 0T which this application is a division.
This machine includes a carriage which shiftahle step by step in one direction as to the left, a spring normally under tension for shifting the carriage in said direction, as to the left, an escupement for controlling the shifting movement, suitable meansns keys for controlling the operation of the escnpement, and means operating to return the carriage to the right, this means operating to tension the spring and then return the carriage. The mechanism thus for described forms no part of my invention. but constitutes the subject matter of my Patents Nos. 1,089,671, Feb. 2 t, 1914, and 1.122.191, Dec. 191-1, Patent No. 1,212,320. ;zrantul Jan. 16, 1917, and the only part of said mechanism necessary to be considered in so far as the present invention is concerned. is a laterall shiftahle carriage which is moved in one direction by a spring.

In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the spring 21 is a coiled torsion spring arranged between two parallel arms of a frame member or yoke 23 carried by the main frame 5 on the inner right hand side thereof, said spring encircling a shaft 24 journaled at its ends in the arms 22. One end of the spring 21 is fixed to a head 25, having a stop arm 26 enacting with the pin 2? projecting from the inner face of one of the frame arms 22, and the other end of the spring is fixed to a rocking head or driving member and moves in reverse directions therewith, the rocking head 28 having an arm 29 which detachably engages one end 01 a lever or driven member 30 mounted between its ends on the contiguous end of the shaft 24. This arm 29 may also move into and out of engagement with the contiguous frame arm 22 in order to limit the move ment, in one direction, of the rocking member 28 by the spring 21.
A link 31 connects the lever 30 directly to the carriage 1 or the support 7 thereof. The opposite end of the shaft 24 to that on Which-the lever 30 is mounted. is T he shaft 24 and the arms 30 and 32 rock as a mit.
The spring 21 as here shown, is tensioned by a plunger guided in the frame and movable vertically therein, and having its upper end projecting above the top plate 4 of the frame, the plunger being pivotally connected at its lower end by a pin-and-slot connection 34 to a rock arm on the rocking head or driving member 28.
The shaft 24 is moved in the opposite direction to the movement thereof effected by the spring 21, and independently of the sprin 21. by any suitable means as a plunger 36 guided in the frame 5 and extending vertically therein, and having its upper end projecting above the top plate 4 of the frame the plunger 36 being pivotally connected at 37 at its lower end to the arm 32 mounted on the shaft 24. lVhether or not the operating member or handle 38 is mounted directly upon the shaft 2 or upon the sleeve 3!) or upon any other part is in'nnaterial in so far as this invention is concerned. The only feature to be considered in so far as the present invention is concerned, is that the plungers 33 and 38 are operated consecutively by any suitable means which happens to be a handle 38 operating other parts of the calculating machine.
Upon the operation of the escapement controlling the movement of the carriage 1 lo the left, this operation being effected by the depression of any one of the keys 14. the spring 21 expands and actuates the rocking head 28.'the lever 30, the link 31 and moves the carriage 1 to the left. \Vhen the handle 38 is operated, the plunger 33 is depressed thus rocking the arm of the rocking head 28 and compressing the spring 21 and moving the arm 29 of the rocking head 28 out of engagement with the lever 30.
Consequently, when the plunger 36 is depressed, the shaft 24 is rocked by reason of the arm 32 to which the plunger 36. is connected, and the carriage 1 returned to the right by reason of the rocking of the arm 30 and the link 31, bringing the lever 30 into engagen'ient with the arm 29 of the rocking head 28 so that when the escapement is again operated, the carriage will be acted upon by the spring 21.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a carriage movable in reverse directions, a spring having a partthereof movable in one direction for advancing the carriage and movable in the reverse direction independently oi" the carriage, the carriage returning independentl y of said part of the spring, and means for moving said part of the spring independently of the carriage and thereby ten'sioning the spring, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' 2. In combination, a carriage movable in reverse directions, a coiled spring, movable means between the carriage and the spring for transi'nitting motion from the spring to advance the carriage and for permitting the spring when being tensioned to move independently of the'carriage, and means for tensioning the spring. substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3.
