IMPROVEMENT IN MITER-MACHlNES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,486, dated July 2, 1872; antedatcd J une 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD HENKLE, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Miter-Gauges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l represents a perspective view of my miter-gauge. Fig.-2 represents a portion of the platform and adjustable table with the latch. Fig. 3 represents a plan of a modification of the same.
My new miter-gauge, for working in lumber, is constructed so as to determine the length of the Work and the angles of the bevel to be sawed, by means of simple adjustments of its parts, as herein fully described.
The rectangular platform A is provided with two pairs of guide-blocks, B O, two series of adjustable segmental plates, D, the centrallypivoted adjusting-table E; and the latter is furnishedv with an adjustable gauge-block', F, to determine the length of the work, and with stop -latches G and sight blocks H. The guide-blocks B C are fastened to the platform A in proper proximity to each other to just permit the blade of a saw to enter the narrow space between them; and each of these blocks is capped with a block,`I, to serve as a stop, limiting the action of the saw when its rim or back comes in contact with them. The caps I will be of the proper thickness to allow the 'edge of the saw to pass through the lumber or Work upon the table E before the saw-back comes in contact with them. The adjustable segmental plates D are provided with open slots 'i into which the pivoted latches G upon the adjusting-table may enter to hold the table in the different positions to which it may be adjusted.
The segments D are made adjustable by set-screws and slots forthe purpose of allowing them to be so varied in their positions as to cause the table E, when adjusted and fastened in any of the several positions of which it is capable, to occupy a slightly different angle to the line of the saw, and thereby the bevels for the miters of frames and other Work may be so varied as to cause the miter-joints of the frame to be slightly open or free at either the inner or outer sides of the framejoints or corners. By thus forming the miterjoints any tendency of the wood to shrink or swell, as the case may be, maybe compensated.
The sight-blocks serve to aid the Workman to quickly determine the proper position or adjustment of the table E for the several angles at which the miters may be sawed. The two latches G, against which the edge or side of the` lumber will be held by the workman, occupy a position at right angles to the inner edge of the gauge-block F, and the latter may be adjusted upon the table to determine the different lengths of moldings or other Work to be sawed.
Depressions t are made in the face of the platform to permit the latches to enter thel slots i in the outer edge of the segments D.
In Fig. 2, which represents a modification of my invention, the segmental plate S is attached -to the table E and turns with it, and may be adjusted to the required positions to bring the table into the several relations necessary, and be held by the set-screw V; and as a substitute for the gauge-block F the block F with its arm o may be used, and it may be reversed in position to accommodate and gauge the length of pieces of lumber, longer than the platform and table.
It will be understood that the adjustments of the table E or E upon the central pivot will turn the lumber Which rests upon it so as to bring it into all the necessary positions to saw the bevels for miter-joints with accuracy, and without any handling except to move it longitudinally upon the table.
Having fully described my improved mitergauge, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as my invention- The adjustable table E having the gaugeblock F and latches G, in combination with platform A and guide-blocks B C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
