To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J Dnvmn, a citizen of the United a States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesexv and State of Connecticut, have invented new and'useful Improvements in Inkstands, of
which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelatesto an ink stand; I The object of the invention is to produce an ink stand'wherein the ink is arranged in a sealed receptacle, and wherein means is provided for permitting the entrance of ,a pen point to said receptacle so that only a determined quantity of ink will be delivered to the point and also so that the stock or holder for. the pen point is held 7 away from the ink andgthus retained in a clean condition. It is a further object of the invention to produce an ink stand providing a normally 7 closed receptacle having a pocket in the 'rtherthrough, for opening the entrance to the well and for swinging the cup orscoop toward such entrance whereby a certain amount of ink may be delivered to the pen point. l 7

Theouter end of the arm is arranged directly over the inlet opening 23 between the dome-shaped top 22 and the ink well, and
the saidouter-end of the arm is preferably enlarged and provided'with a round periphery, so that this end of the arm I'will hereinafter refer o, for convenience as the head thereof and I have designated the same by the numeral 30. The head is provided with a transverse opening, the endwalls of which 'arestraight, but theoside walls of which are inclined at opposite angles. The inner side wall is indicated by the numeral 31 and is pitched or cut at a less angle than theouter side wall '32. The wall '31 thus provides What may be termed a ledge which is die signed to be contactedwith by the end 33 of apen holder or'stock 34 that carries a pen point 35, when the said'point is to be passed throughthe opening 23 to receive a quantity of ink, in a manner which will presently be described. When the pen point is positioned to receive the ink the stock will rest upon a concaved surface 36'upon the upper face of the head 30.

This, as previously stated, brings one endof the pen holder against the-inclined wall 31 and the remainder of thevendfof the said pen holder against the concaved surface 36 in the head 30, permitting the pen point 35 to pass through the opening in the head. A downward pressure on the head by the pen holder causes the valve/38 to leave its seat 25. This pressure on the pen holder also Causes the lever 29 to be swung on its pivot 28 so that the end of the lever in the hood is elevated in said head and as a consequence the link connection between the arm 40 of the cup or scoop 39 swings the said arm 40 upward of the bottom or top 22, bringmay be removed without contacting any of the parts of the improvement and when so removed the parts will return to their initial osition, 'efiectively closing allopenings between the top 22 and-the ink receptacle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device forthe purpose set forth, a closed ink receptacle having an opening therein, a scoop in said receptacle, a pen directing element, a valve carried "thereby, means between said element and scoop for normally retaining the element in one position and the valve thereof in closing posi t1on with respect to the referred to opening, and said means designed to actuate to unseat the valve and elevate thejscoop toward the opening when pressure is applied on the pen directing element. v
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a closed ink well having an opening in the :tOp thereof and a pocketin the bottom thereof, a scoop normally, received in said pocket, a pen directing element on the top of the well, a valve carried thereby, means between said element and saidscoop for normally retaining said element inanelevated position and the valve thereof in closing positionwith respect to the referred to opening, and said means designedto actuate to unseat the valve and elevate the'scoop toward the opening'when pressure isapplied to th p ir cting element,
