HERMETIC CLOSURE FOR BECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM A. LoRENz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State ofConnecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hermetic Clocles that the free air can be easily and freely withdrawn from the interior ofthe receptacles by the exhausting apparatus usually employed, and the seal tightly and securely effected after the air has been withdrawn from the interior and the closures are subjected on the outside to normal atmospheric pressure.
To attain this object the closure has in its inner face an, annular groove that is wider than the edge of the mouth of the receptacle and'has outside of the groove a flange that will extend down about the outside of the edge ofthe mouth of the receptacle. Located in the groove in the closure is a fleXi-' ble gasket that has an annular groove in its exposed face. hen the closure with such a gasket is first placed over the receptacle I only a small portion of the exposed face of the gasket rests on the edge of the mouth of the receptacle and thus air can flow outward freely when the receptacle is being exhausted, but when the closure is pressed down the gasket spreads over an extended area inside and outside of the edge of the mouth of the receptacle and insures a tight and secure seal.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows a side view, with a portion cut in central section, of a receptacle and a closure constructed according to this invention, before sealing. Fig. 2 shows a similar view after sealing. Fig. 3 shows a plan of the gasket. Fig. 4 shows an edge view of the gasket. Fig. 5 shows on larger scale a section of a portion of the receptacle and closure before sealing. Fig. 6 is a similar View after sealing.

The upper edge around the Inouth of the receptacle is by preference slightly beveled inward and its outer corner rounded so to form a sealing shoulder 2. receptacle. Around the inner face of the closure inside of the flange is a groove 6 which is wider than the upper edge of the receptacle and isdesirably curved in cross section. A flexible gasket 7"usually made of rubber is located in the groove in the inner face of the ClOSUIBr The back of this gasket is shaped to fit the groove and in its exposed face is an annular groove 8. This groove is preferably curved in cross section and is located a little nearer the inside edge of the gasket than the .outside edge.
When the closure is first laid upon the receptacle only a small section of the outer edge of the gasket rests upon the sealing shoulder on the upper edge-of the receptacle This reduces to a minimum the area of contact between the edge of the receptacle and the gasket so that during the subsequent exhausting operation air can freely escape from the interior of the receptacle over its edge and under the edge of the gasket. This manner of grooving the gasket enables it to be made of a smaller amount of material and renders it more flexible, or less resisting than if made solid, so that when the closure is pressed down for sealing the receptacle the gasket will readily yield and spread itself over a large area about the outside and inside of the rim of the receptacle and fill in the space between the outer wall of the receptacle and the inner wall of the flange around the closure as shown in.

The invention claimed is;
1.
