DIRECTION-SIGNALING- DEVICE FOR VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
Application filed October 24, 1914. Serial N 0. 868,458.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. HEBERN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Direction-Signaling Devices for Vehicles, of which the following is a. specification.
The object of the present invention 'is to provide a signaling device to be attached to the front or rear, or both, of automobiles, street cars, motor cycles, and other vehicles, to indicate, both in the day time and at night, whether the vehicle is turning or is about to turn, and if so, in what direction.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a front View thereof.
Referring to the drawing, a tubular shaft 91 rotates in a bearing 92 and is enlarged at its front end, and carries, in a socket 93 in the front end, a reflector 9 1 for an incandescent lamp 96, a green lens 97 being secured in front of said reflector. The wires 95 for said lamp are connected to rings 98, which, as the tubular shaft 91 rotates, are in contact with contacts 99 connected with wires 101. To said forward enlargement of the tubular shaft is secured an arm 102 carrying at its end a reflector 103 for an incandescent lamp 104 and having a red glass lens 106. Said lamp 104 is supplied with electricity by wires 107 connected to the wires 95. When the car is going straight ahead a red light shows immediately above the green light, and when it is going to the right or left the red light shows to the right or left, as the case may be, of the green light. Said enlargement has, corresponding to the different signaling positions of the arms, a series of sockets 100, and a bolt 105 actuated by a coiled spring 110 is adapted to enter any one of said sockets. Said bolt has a rounded front end, so that while the bolt holds the arm in the position desired sufliciently against any ordinary force, by the exercise of sufficient force the arm can be turned notwithstanding the engagement of said bolt in said socket.
I claim In a vehicle direction signaling device, the combination of a stationary electric lamp visible from the front of the vehicle, an arm rotatable about said lamp in a vertical plane, an electric lamp carried by the outer end of said arm and visible at all times from the front of the vehicle, means for rotating said arm about said first-named lamp and means for arresting said arm in an upward extending vertical position, or in a horizontal position extending in either direction from said first named lamp.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
V v EDWARD H. HEBERN. Witnesses:
