Be it known that I, JOHN J. RICHTER, a citizen of 'the United States, residing at Thief River Falls, in the county of Pennington and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Machines, of which the following is aV specification.

This invention has for its primary object the production of improved mechanism for packing cigars or other articles in compact bundles of any size desired within certain limits. A further object is to provide improved means for regulating the parts of the mechanism so that it will accommodate any number of cigars or other articles which are to be tied in bundles. With these and other ,objects in view which will be ap-` parent to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates, my invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

In the drawing forming part of this speciication, Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line X-X of Fig. 1.

In the drawing let A represent a suitable base on which a yoke B is mounted, said yoke being hollow and containing part of the operating and adjusting mechanism of my invention. C, D and E are three sides of a rectangular packing space, the fourth being formed by the base. This space is for the cigars or other articles which are to be packed. The side C is selectively positioned and held by a thumb bolt 2 passing through the lower portion of the plate and through a slot 3 in the base. The sides D and E are movable inwardly to compress the articles into compact condition ready to be tied by a ribbon F or other fastening means. The sides D and E are respectively provided with plunger shafts 4 and 5 slidably mounted in the yoke in passages 6 and 7, said shafts and its adjusting parts being similar in construction. A description of one will therefore apply to both.

Each of the plungers has a central longitudinal bore 10' over the outer end of which is secured by threaded connection a cap 11. Closely fitting said bore and movable longitudinally therein is a knuckle 12 having an opening 13 and formed with a stem 14.

Surrounding this stem is a rotatable sleeve of the handle to hold the sleeve rotatably on the stem. A

j The sleeve 15 is in threaded engagement with the cap 11 so that by turning the handle the knuckle is adjusted by a micrometer or screw adjustment. Thus either of the sides D and E can be adjusted as to the ultimate inward position which it will assume by the inward throw of the operating mechanisni to be hereinafter described.

Pivotally mounted upon the pin 20 in the yoke is an operating handle 21, one arm 22 of which projects outwardly so that it can be manipulated by hand and the other arm projects inwardly and is secured by a link 24 to an arm 25 of a bell crank 26. This bell crank is pivoted at its angle in the yoke and its other arm 27 plays freely in the opening 13 butengages the knuckle to reciprocate the side E when the handle 22 is swung up or down. Similar operating mechanism to that just described is provided for the side D, a link 28 being similarly connected to a bell crank 29 but pivotally attached to that portion of the lever 21 on the handle side of the pivot thereof and the bell crank 29 having an arm 30 playing freely in the opening 13 in the knuckle 12 which cooperates with the plunger 4. Thus both sides D and E are moved inwardly simultaneously to compress and form a bundle or moved outwardly simultaneously to release a bundle after it has been formed and tied.

A packing machine for ci gars and other articles, comprising, in combination, a base having an upward yoke, sides On said base forming a bundle compressing space, aplurality el? said sides having` hollow plunger shafts slidably supported in said yoke, a knuckle joint slidably mounted in each of said shafts, a screw adjustment between each of said knuckle joints and its adjacent shaft for regulating the inward thrust of said movable sides and means connected with said knuckle joint for moving said movable sides inwardly and outwardly.

L packing' machine for cigars and other articles, comprising, in combination, a base having an upward yoke, sides on said base forming with said base a bundle compressing space, a plurality of said sides having hollow plunger shafts slidably supported in said yoke, a knuckle oint slidably mounted in each of said shafts, a screw adjustment between each of said knuckle joints and its adjacent shaft for regulating the inward thrust of said movable sides, mea-ns connected with said knuckle joints for moving said movable sides inwardly and outwardly, one of said sides being selectively positioned in stationary position on said base, and means tor securing said selectively positioned side in stationary position on said base.
