GUARD FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 18, 1915. Serial No. 67,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY F. Pnnnrn, of Amsterdam, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Sewing-Machines, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a guardtttachment for sewing machines, and is designed more particularly for use on button sewing machines. The object of the invention is to provide a guard which, through the operation of the machine, is automatically thrown into its protecting position, so that if through accident or negligence, a button is improperly placed in position and the needle strikes the button instead of going through the hole in the button, the part which will break, either the needle or the button, will strike the guard and will therefore be prevented from flying off into the face or eye of the operative.
The invention consists in the device shown, in its preferable embodiment, in the drawing. accompanying and forming part thereof, and the invention will be now more particularly described and claimed.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a sewing machine which may be of any desired construction, but which in the drawings is a button sewing machine now in common use except for the attachment which will be here- Y .is secured a support 8 having an offset arm 9 to which is pivotally secured a bar 10 with a curved end 12, the latter having a perforation adapted to receive a pin '14 projecting from the rod 6 herebefore referred to. The bar 10 is supported on the pivot 15 and the long end of the bar 10 has'a guard 16 secured to it, these parts being so constructed as to permit the guard 16 to be in either of the two positions shown inFig. 1. When the bar is in the position shown in full lines in F ig. 1, the guard is thrown out of position, but when the bar 10 is moved on its pivot 15, the guard. will be moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1

The rear end of the rod 6 is provided with a bent portion 24, having a hooked end 26, designed to cooperate with the lower end 28 of a pivoted lever 30 secured to'the machine on a pivot 32 shown best in Fig. 4. A'spring 36 is employed which normally holds the upper end of the lever 30 in its outer posi-Z tion as "shown in full lines in Fig. 1. bracket 38 supports a bell-crank lever 40 pivoted upon a pin 42, the outer end of this lever being connected by a chain 44 with a suitable treadle (not shown). One end 46 of the lever 40 is arranged to contact with the lever 30 so that when theoperator draws the outer end of the lever 40 downfrom the position shown in full lines to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the end 46 of the bell-crank lever 40 moves the upper end Of the lever 30 inward to the position shown in Fig. 1, thus moving the lower end of the lever-3O outward from the positionshown in full lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thereby drawing the hooked end 26 and its rod .6 through the sleeve 5 in'opposition tothe spring 20 to cause the guard 16 to move from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to the protecting position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A pivoted latch 50 is provided which may lock the lever 30 in the position shown in I against the influence of the spring 54: so as to release said lever 30. In the position the parts occupy when the machine is not in operation, the side of the lever 30 is in such a position as to hold the latch against the influence of a spring 5l out of locking position. lVhen the operative moves the bell crank lever it) so as to throw the lever 30 on its pivot to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the spring 51 will cause the latch 50 to swing on its pivot and lock the lever 30 in the position shown in Figs. 3 and it. During this same movement of the lever 3 the belt shifter 56, which moves with the lever 30, has drawn the belt 58 from the loose pulley 60 shown in Fig. l to the tight pulley (32 as shown in Fig. l. The main shaft of the machine will now be caused to rotate and will continue its rotation, until the cam wheel 6% is in such position that its cam 66 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. will move against the end 68 of the latch 50 and throw said latch 50 until the upper end of the lever 30 is released from the latch when the spring 36 will cause the lever 30 to move to its normal position shown in full lines in Fig. l and permit the spring 20 to throw the bar ll) and the guard 16 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the belt shifter 56 simultaneously moving the belt 58 from the tight pulley (32 to the loose pulley 60 when the retation of the main shaft will cease, until the lever l0 has again been pulled downwardly to start the machine to repeat the operation just described.
From the foregoing and the accompanying drawings it will be seen that l have produced a device, which through the ordinary operation of the machine, will be automatically thrown into its protective position, and, as the machine stops, the guard is automatically thrown out of position in order that the operative may feed the button for the next sewing. No particular operation of the operative is needed to place the guard in position or out of position for this is done automatically and is done whether or not the operative desires it. I am aware that it has heretofore been proposed to attach a guard to a sewing machine in such a manner that when the operative throws down the prcsser foot the guard will be thrown in position, but regard my invention as essentially different therefrom.
It is obvious that changes and moditlcm tions may be made in the form and construction of my invention, and therefore reference should be made to the appended claims to determine the scope of my invention.
Claims:
1. A sewing machine having a needle-bar and a needle carried thereby, in combination with a guard supported independently of the needle-bar and movable into protecting and non-protecting positions with reference to the stitching point, and automatically acting means for moving said guard between its protecting and non-protecting positions.
The combination in av sewing machine, of a main shaft, mechanism for starting and stopping said main shaft, and a guard capabio of assuming two positions, said guard being thrown into its protecting position by the starting mechanism as the main shaft is operated.
3. The combination in a. sewing machine, of a. main shaft, a lever and co-acting parts for causing the rotation of said shaft, and a guard capable of assuming two positions connected with said lever, said lever being constructed and arranged to throw said guard in its protecting position as it is moved to start the main shaft.
l. The con'ibination in a sewing machine, of a main shaft, fast and loose pulleys, a lever and co-acting parts cooperating with said pulleys, and a guard capable of assuming two positions connected with said lever, said lever being constructed and arranged to throw said guard into its protecting position. as it is moved to shift the belt from the loose to the fast pulley.
The combination in a sewing machine, ofa main shaft, a lever and co-acting parts for causing the rotation of said shaft, a guard capable of assuming two positions nnccted with said lever, said lever being constructed and arranged to throw said guard into its protecting position as it is moved to start the main shaft, a latch arranged to hold said lever in its protecting position, and means for throwing said latch to release said lever and permit the guard to be moved to its original position.
6. The combination in a sewing machine, of a main shaft, fast and loose pulleys, a lever and co-acting parts cooperating with said pulleys, a guard capable of assuming two positions connected with said lever, said lever being constructed and arranged to throw said guard into its protecting position it is moved to shift the belt from the loose to the fast pulley, a latch arranged to hold said lever in its protecting position, and means for throwing said latch to release said lever and permit the guard to be moved to its original position.
7. The combination in a sewing machine, of a main shaft, a lever and co-acting parts for causing the rotation of said shaft, a guard pivotally mounted and capable of as suming two positions, and a rod connecting said guard with said lever whereby the movement of said lever will cause movement of said rod to throw the guard upon its pivot into one of the two positions.
8. The combination in a sewing machine, of a main shaft, a lever and co-acting parts for causing the rotation of said shaft, a guard pivotally mounted and capable of assuming two positions, a rod connecting said guard with said lever whereby the movement of said lever will cause movement of said rod to throw the guard upon its pivot into a protecting position, a latch arranged to hold said lever in its protecting position, and means for throwing said latch to release said lever and permit the guard to be moved to its original position.
9. In a sewing machine and in combination with a needle thereof, a main shaft, fast and loose pulleys, a driving belt, a lever and co-acting parts cooperating with said pulleys, a guard pivotally mounted and capable of assuming two positions, a rod connecting said guard with said lever whereby the movement of said lever as it is actuated to shift the belt from the loose to the fastpulley will cause the rod to throw the guard upon its pivot into a protecting positlon, a latch arranged to hold said lever in its protecting position, and means for throwing said latch to release said lever to permit the guard to move to its original position.
10. In a sewing machine and in combination with a needle thereof, a main shaft, fast and loose pulleys, a driving belt, a lever and co-acting parts cooperating with said pulleys, a guard pivotally mounted and capable of assuming two positions, a rod connecting said guard with said lever whereby the movement of said lever as it is actuated to shift the belt from the loose to the fast pulley will cause the rod to throw the guard upon its pivot into a protecting position, a latch arranged to hold said lever in its protecting position, means for throwing said latch to release said lever to permit the guard to be moved to its original position, and a spring for moving said guard to its original position when said latch releases said lever.
11. In a sewing machine having stitchforming mechanism including a needle, in combination, a guard movable into a protecting position adjacent the needle, and automatic means for stopping the machine and moving said guard to a position out of the operatives way.
12. In a sewing machine having stitchforming mechanism including a needle, means for starting and stopping said machine including a lever, a movable guard for protecting the operative and located adjacent the needle, and means controlled by said lever for moving said guard into and out of a protecting position when the machine is started and stopped respectively.
13. In a sewing machine having stitchforming mechanism including a needle, in combination, a guard movable into a position adjacent the needle and into a posltion out of the operatives way, and means for moving the guard automatically into one of said positions and manually into the other of said positions.
