BOAT HANDLING APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 13.1918.

BOAT-HANDLING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro CARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Astoria, in the county of Clatsop' and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Handling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boat handling apparatus for lowering and raising a boat to and from the water, in a highly expeditious manner,
An important obj ect of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above mentioned character, which is especially useful on ships, where it is required to frequently launch a small boat or dory from the vessel.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above mentioned character, which may be operated for attachment, from within the boat, by one man.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above mentioned character, which when installed in a dory or small boat, automatically releases the boat from the ships tackle, upon the boat contacting with the water.
ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the hull of a boat, having my apparatus attached thereto,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a releasing device secured within the hull Fig. 3 is'a similar view of an attaching device secured within the hull of a boat.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the hull of a boat having a keel 6.

Disposed midway of the standards 11, are
Extending from the ships davits is tackle 21, carrying a rod 22, which is adapted to engage with the releasing or attaching apis curved at its ends as at 23.
When it is desired to launch the boat, the U-shaped links 10, of the standards 7, are placed upon the rod 22 and the boat lowered to the water in the usual manner.
pon contacting with the water, the weight of the boat is relieved from the rod 22 and of engagement therewith, as indicated by its arrows, thus leaving the boat free from the tackle. When it is desired to hoist the dory aboard ship, one man standing in the center of the dory may grasp the rod 22 and thrust the ends of the same transversely into the sockets 1 1, such rod forcing the springs 16 inwardly, to pass the same, and being subsequently held in the sockets by these springs.
It is obvious that the dory may now be raised to the ships deck.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts as will remain Within the scope of the invention and the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A hoisting device adapted to be installed upon 'a boat, comprising standards secured to the boat, sockets formed in the upper ends of the standards, spring retaining elements arranged adjacent the sockets to cover the opposite sides thereof, and a rod adapted to be inserted Within the sockets.
2. A hoisting apparatus adapted to be 111- stalled upon a boat, comprising standards adapted to be connected with the boat near the ends thereof, a pair of sockets carried by the upper end of each standard and disposed upon the opposite sides thereof, leaf springs connected with the end of the sockets and adapted to cover the open sides thereof, a rod adapted to contact With the leaf springs and adapted to be forced into the sockets, and retractile coil springs connected in the standards.
3. A hoisting device adapted to be installed upon a boat, comprising standards adapted to be connected with the boat near the ends thereof, a pair of sockets carried by the upper end of each standard and disposed upon the opposite sides thereof, leaf springs connected With the ends of the sockets and adapted to cover the open sides thereof, and a rod adapted to contact With the leaf springs and adapted to be forced into the sockets.
4:. A hoisting apparatus adapted to be installed upon a boat, comprising standards adapted to be connected with the boat near the ends thereof, a socket carried by the upper end of each' standard, leaf springs connected With the ends of the socket and adapted to cover the open side thereof, a rod adapted to contact with the leaf springs and adapted to be forced into the sockets, and retractile coil springs connected in the standards.
5. A hoisting apparatus adapted to be installed upon a boat, comprising standards adapted to be connected With the boat near the ends thereof, a pair of sockets carried by the upper end of each standard and disposed upon the opposite sides thereof and stationary With relation thereto, a rod adapted to be inserted in the sockets, and yielding means to prevent the improper re moval of the rod from the sockets.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
