INVENTOR.
A TTORNEY.
ELMER E. sTONE, on NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, AssIeNOR To THE ERICA HARDWARE CORPORATION, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT. I
DRAG-BOX.
Application filed August 21, 1916. Serial No. 116,204.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER B. STONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Drag-Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of receptacles that are especially employed about factories for the storing and transporting of articles or parts of articles being manufactured, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a light, strong and durable box to be employed for this purpose.
One form of box embodying my invention and inthe construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drag box embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail View, in side elevation, of a portion of a drag box embodying my invention, with parts broken away to show construction. v
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates my improved drag box as a whole, that is preferably of rectangular shape, longer than it is wide, although this is immaterial. The box is provided with a bottom and is open at the top.
The ends 6 have grip recesses 7 that are formed by indenting, as by means of dies, the metal composing the ends of the box, these recesses each having a top 8 and a curved wall 9 extending from the top downwardly to a point where it meets the end 6.
A lift comprising a lip 10 projects outwardly from each end of the box and the metal comprising this lift is doubled upon itself, one fold being bent at an angle to the lift to form a plate 11 that is secured to the flat face of the end of the box, and the other fold being extended in the plane of the lift to com rise a flange 12 that extends into the recess l where it is secured to the top thereof. An opening 13 is formed through each lift within which a hook may be inserted as a means of dragging the box Over a surface.
In the preferred form of construction, the upper edges of the ends are reinforced by pieces 14 doubled over the edges and riveted to the ends at a short distance from the upper edges thereof, the outer fold of each reinforcement 14 being passed over the edge of the plate 11, some of the rivets 15 employed for holding the reinforcement also passing through the plate 11. This inclosing of the plate 11 within the reinforcement 14 provides a bulge 16 on the latter.
It will be seen from this construction that the means for handling the box is sufficient to enable the fingers to get a firm grasp and this without the recess 7 extending unduly into the box and without the lift 10 projecting too far from the end of the box, the two parts thus having maximum strength, neither being weakened by reason of too great width while the handles are rigid to withstand the usage to which they are subjected.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim 1. A box having a recess in one side thereof, and a lift comprising a piece of material folded upon itself, one fold being straight from end to end and terminating in said recess and the other fold having its end bent at an angle to said straight fold and secured to the outer surface of the box.
2. A box having a recess in one surface thereof, a lift including a plate secured to the surface Of the box, a lip projecting at an angle to said plate and a flange located at an angle to said plate and secured within said recess.
3. A box having a recess comprising a flat top wall, a lift including a plate secured against the surface of the box, a lip located at an angle to said plate, and a flange located at an angle to said plate and secured against the fiat upper surface of said recess.
4. A box having a recess in one side thereof, and a lift comprising a piece of metal folded to produce a T-shaped piece the stem of which is secured to the side of the box and the cross piece of which extends into and is secured within said recess.
5. A box having a recess in one surface thereof, and a lift including a plate bent into Patented oct. 29, Iota,
against the tOp: Wall o-f sivitl recast-immune T-shape with the cross piece pmrtia lly fclcl ed' other fold being bent at substantially right upon itself and partially extending into and terminating in the recess and the stem of "which is secured to the side of the box.
61A box having a recess with a flattop Wall, and a lift comprising a piece of metal folded upon itself, one fold being secured the outer su'rfzice of the bcxi'adjecenfi to said recess. Y
