Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. STEVENS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mountings,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mountings for eyeglasses and spectacles of the finger piece type.
The essential objects of my invention are to lock the screw against escape without riveting or upsetting the screw thus allowing ready removal of the same for purpose of repair; to avoid the danger of weakening the bric'lge ends or supporting portions by screw seats or cavities; to prevent impedi ment to the oscillation of the levers due to dirt, dust, or other foreign substances be tween the parts; to prevent roughening of the pivot surfaces; and to attain these ends in a structure facile to assemble and inexpensive to construct.
To the above ends my invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

The eyeglasses or spectacle frame shown comprises a bridge 5, end supports 6, lens straps 7 and attaching lugs 8, engaged with the lenses 9 by attaching screws 10. In conjunction with the above or any other desired form of frame my novel device may be employed.
Fast to or integral with the upper face of each support 6 is a tubular post 12 provided with an internal thread 13. The hollow portion or threaded cavity of the post extends preferably from the top to the bottom of the post, and does not extend into the support 6 as such a construction would tend to dangerously weaken the support.
The operating arms or levers 15 carry nose guards 16 upon their rear ends and thumb pieces 17 upon their forward ends. In an intermediate portion of each lever is an opening 18, to admit the pivot element, around and from which vertically extends a sleeve 19-integral with the lever, provided with vertical grooves 20 forming resultant shoulders 20*. These vertical corrugations afford pockets for the dirt swept from the surface of the posts by the oscillation of the levers. Each lever rests upon a support and its sleeve embraces as a running fit a post 12. This sleeve'and post construction affords a maximum bearing area for the pivotal elements.
In each post is a screw 21 comprising in detail shank 22 provided with a thread 23 adapted to engage the thread 13 in the post. Above the shank of the screw is a shoulder 24 provided with lateral projections 25, 26, 27, and 28. The shoulder and projections extend to overlap the tops of the post and sleeve, to permit the one coil. of the spring to engage the shoulder. In the present instance the shoulder 24 is shown polygonal with four points, but the number and shape of the points may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. The screw is completed by a head 30 of greater diameter than the shoulder provided with the usual slot 31.
The operating spring for each lever is helical and comprises coils 33 which embrace the sleeve 19 and shoulder 24, the lowermost coil 34 resting upon the lever 15, and the uppermost coil 35 engaging the shoulder 24. The latter coil is continued to form an arm 37 which bears against the rear of some fixed support such as an adjacent strap 7. The lowermost coil 34 is extended into an arm 38 whose bent end 39 engages the lever arm 15. The described springs induce the guards 16 toward each other, so that the structure is removed from the nose by manually compressing the lever portions 17.
It will be noted that two of the shoulder points, namely 25 and 26, are in engagement with the coil 35 so that a complete or substantial rotary movement of the screw is prevented. In other words the spring 00- operates with the shoulder points to perform a locking function in addition to the usual spring action.
1. In eyeglasses or spectacles, the combination with the frame, of a tubular post on the frame provided with an internal thread extending only to the bottom of the post, an
operating lever j ournaled on the post, a sleeve fast to the lever embracing the post, a screw in the post, head on the screw, and a spring surrounding the sleeve.
2. In eyeglasses or spectacles, the combination with the frame, of a tubular post on the frame provided with an internal thread, a lever resting against the frame, a sleeve on the lever embracing the post, a screw comprising a shank provided with a thread engaging the first thread, a shoulder overlapping the post and sleeve provided with radial projections, and a head above the shoulder, a spring surrounding the sleeve and shoulder comprising a coil in contact with a projection, and arms engaging the frame and lever.
3. In eyeglasses or spectacles, the combination with the frame, of a post on the frame, a lever journaled on the post, a screw in the post, an annular shoulder on the screw adapted to abut against the top of the post, projections upon the shoulder, and a helical spring surrounding the post and engaging one or more of the projections.
