WRENCH.
Speeification of Letters Patent.
Patented 0011.29, 1918.
Application filed April 20, 1917. Serial No, 163,453:
To a l 'llom it may I'OIN'VI'II lie it known that 1. Join: W. Suavnu, a citizen of the llnited States, residing at lien, in the rounty of Stone and State of Arkansas, have invented eel-lain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenehes, of whieh the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and the prineipal ohjert ol' the invention is to provide a devire of this rharaeter with means whereby the niovahle jaw has sliding: movement on the shank toward the stationary jaw, so that the same may he adjusted to lit a not without having to operate s-erew means as heretofore.
Another ohjeet of my invention is to pro vide means \vherehy the ratehet levers may readily he replared. and the delai'hable pivot pins therefore eleminated.
Another object of the invention is to provide means wherehy the wrenrh may he used i]: the plare of several ditierent kinds of tools.
A further ohjert of the invention is to provide the jaws with engaging faces on each side of the shank so that either side of the wrench may be used.
Another ohjert of the invention is t pro vide a derive of this rharaeter whirl: is simple and durahle in roost rlu'lion. reliahle and (llltltlll in operation and one which ran he mauul'aetured and placed upon the market at a mininuun cost.
The invention also ('onsists in rertaiu other features of construetion and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to he hereinafter fully deserihed, illustraled in the aeeon'ipanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will he had to the accompanying drawings. wherein like eharat-ters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a part sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 13.
In these figures, 1 represents the shank having the handle 2 secured thereon and also having a. portion projecting beyond the handle and formed into the shape of a puneh 3. At its other end said shank carries the stationary jaw 4 formed with a hammer 5 at one end and the nail pulley t: at its othei end. The shank has a rireular groove 7 formed on each side thereof and teeth 8 are ltlt'tlttll in these grooves. The. shank is also provided with graduations ti representing int-hes and frat-lions thereof on one face. as shown in Fig. it. t represents the sliding jaw loaded on the shank and provided with reresses in its four sides. the reersses on the lou; sides heuu, so formed. as to leave a (:il'rillal'. in erose sertionl strip of material to span the recesses tor forming journals ll for the rah-hut levers i2 and 1:: whivh are earl: provided with a transverse i'eees in the under tare thereof t he i'e eivwl upon aid journals. and said levers lorated on eaeh of the long side oi said moiahle jaw. These levers areheld in engagement with the teeth 5 hy in ans of the springs 1t and ii carried hy the movahle jaw and engaging with the heads of the lovers. The levels are provided with linger-engragins portions ll) whereby said levers may he released from the teeth so as to move the jaw. The mov: hle jaw is provided with a douhle head lT forming an engaging fare on Ulltll side of the shank mii'iperating will: like lane on the stationary jaw. so that either side of these jaws may he used to engage with the nut..
The tool may he used in the place of several dill'ereut kinds ot tools. For instance, the punt-h mav he used for punching holes in leather or the like. while the stationary jaw 4 may he used to drive nails or to pull nails. Ky operating the lovers 1) and 13 with the tlnunh and fingers of one hand. the movahle jaw may l e instantly placed in any desired position in relation to the other jaw and as the graduations on theshank may be seen through the opening;' in the movable jaw, the jaw may he set a determined distanee from the stationary jaw without havint: to test the distance on a nut or the like.
It. is thought from the foregoing that the ad 'antages and novel features of my invention will he readily apparent.
I desire it to he understood that I may make slight (-hanges in the eonstruetion arid in the eoinhination and arrangement. of the several parts. provided that sueh (-hanges fall within the seope .of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A \vreneh eomprising a shank having a plurality ol'notehesinoppositesidesthereof. a stationary jaw on said shank. a movable aw slidahle on the shank and having longihirlinal recesses in uppnsih siiim lhvreof, said rem-sacs bring formed to itilYl' :1 mil"- cului', in (cross section), strip of lllilit'l'ifli to span em-li 01'' said l'UlUSSQP-v tn 'i'ol'ni jUHllmlH, 'utchut levers each having 2\ transverse I'LHGSS in the undur fuw (iii-1'00) to ruwivu Mlili journals for pivoting said levers, and Hut springs having um: and of each connvctvil In said movable jmvq um] H10 nthvi' um] :iilzi itvvi in engage said levers for normally retaining um: uml u! miri iuvur in vngngunwul \villi lliinotches in said Nilillliv'. In hmtimun v \vln-rvui' I uliix my signature in n'uwnur 01' (\v0 itll(hfil\.
