This invention relates to improvements in upholstering devices. p

The main objects of this invention are: 1

First, to provide an improved upholstering device which facilitates the manufacture of cushions having flute-like tufts or a flutedsurface. a

Second, to provide an improved upholstering device which greatly increases the output of upholsterers in the manufacture of cushions such as automobile seat cushions.

Third, to provide an improvedupholsten ing device which may be successfully operated by others than skilled upholsterers.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will'definite'ly appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the-claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Referring to the drawing, I provide a form 1 having a fluted bottom 2 with tufting bars 3 disposed between the flutes so that the upper edges of these bars project above the bottom so as to support the cushion at spaced intervals to facilitate manufacture.

, These bars have spaced notches 1 on their to engage the projectingtufting bars. These partition plates are preferably formed of a piece of sheet metal-folded upon itself with their edges spaced to form thc slot 6, the rivets 7 retaining the parts in position.

The filler box 81's provided with a removable side 9, the side being retained by the spring clips 10 pivoted at 11 on the ends of the filler box to swing over the keepers 12,see Fig. IX.

This removable side carries a series of follower bars 13 spaced so as to pass between the partition plates and the tufting bars,see Figs. I, III, IV and XII.

The form is provided with guide posts 14 having ratchet teeth 15 thereon while the filler box 8 is provided with coacting guides 16 provided with ratchet members or pawls 17. To simultaneously actuate these pawls to release them and also as a means of ap faces or flute-like tufts.

A spring 23 connected to the. filler box and to one of the levers 22 urges all of the ratchet pawls to their engaging position. A disengaging lever 24 is pivoted at 25 and connected to one of the links20rso that they may be simultaneously disengaged.

I have illustrated my invention: as I have adapted it in practice in the manufacture Of-cushions shown in my application for Letters Patent filed concurrently herewith.

In the manufacture of cushions I first arrange the cushion cover- 26 in thetfornrso thatit sags into the flutings of the bottom, being supported. at intervals by the tufting bars. The cushion skirt 27 turnedybaok over the form asindicated and the backing 28 is turned OVBIH the fixed side and end walls ofthe filler box. The partition plates 5 being in position the filling inaterialis arranged between theseplates as indicated in Fig. 111 and the side 9 adjusted to position and the press actuated to press the material as indicated inFi IV. The partition plates 5 are thBILmIGHlOVQCl and the backing folded down orarranged over the follower bars andsecured, as indicated in Fig. XII.

In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form having a fluted bottom, tufting bars disposed between the flutes, removable partitions engageable with said tufting bars, and follower bars adapted to pass between said removable partition plates and said tufting bars permitting the re moval of the partition plates and the arranging of a backing over said follower bars and the securing thereof at said tufting bars, said follower bars being longitudinally removable.

In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form having spaced tufting bars, removable partitions engageable with. said tufting bars, and follower bars adapted to pass between said removable partition plates and said tufting bars permitting the removal of the partition plates and the arranging of a backing over said follower bars and the securing thereof at said tufting bars, said follower bars being longitudinally removable.

In an upholstering machine, the com bination of a form having a fluted bottom, tufting bars disposed between the flutes, a filler box provided with a removable side havinfollower bars thereon adapted to pass etween said tufting bars permitting the arranging of a backing over said follower bars and the securing thereof at said tufting bars, means for securing said detachable filler box side permitting the longitudinal withdrawal of said follower bars, guide posts on said form provided with ratchet teeth, and guide members on said filler box coacting with said guide posts and provided with retaining ratchets.

8, In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form, spaced tufting bars, a filler box provided with a removable side having follower bars thereon adapted to pass between said tufting bars permitting the arranging of a backing over said follower bars and the securing thereof at said tufting bars, means for securing said detachable filler box side permitting the longitudinal withdrawal ,of said follower bars, guide posts on said form provided with ratchet teeth, and guide members on said filler box coacting with said guide posts and provided with retaining ratchets.

9. In an upholstcring machine, the combination of a form having a fluted bottom, tufting bars disposed between the flutes, a filler box provided with a removable side having follower bars thereon adapted to pass between said tufting bars permitting the arranging of a backing over said follower bars and the securing thereof at said tufting bars, and means for securing said detachable filler box side permitting the longitudinal withdrawal of said follower bars.

I11 an upholstering machine, the combination of a form, spaced tufting bars, a filler box provided with a removable side having follower bars thereon adapted to pass between said tufting bars permitting the arranging of a backing over said follower bars and the securing thereof at said tufting bars, and means for securing said detachable filler box side permitting the longitudinal withdrawal of said follower bars.

11. In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form having a fluted bottom, tufting bars disposed between the flutes, and removable partitions having slots in their lower edges engageable with said tufting bars.

12. In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form, spaced tufting bars, and removable partitions engageable with said tufting bars.

13. In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form having a fluted bottom, tufting bars disposed between the flutes, and follower bars adapted to pass between said tufting bars permitting the arranging of a backing over the follower bars and securing thereof at said tufting bars, said follower bars being longitudinally removable.

14:. In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form, spaced tufting bars having spaced notches in their edges, and follower bars adapted to pass between said tufting bars permitting the arranging of a backing over the follower bars and securing thereof at said tufting bars, said follower bars being longitudinally removable.
