Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Vulcanizer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for locally heating a substance. I
:This invention has utility when embodied in ,vulcanizers or means fortreating certain materials as caoutchouc or rubber, being especiallyv adapted for repair of objects made "therefrom aspneumatic-tires andthc inner tubes and casings therefor.

The"vulca1iizer embodies the bail or clamping member 1 having the threaded arms 2 with which coact the adjusting nuts 3,which are winged to permit ready ma -nipulation. VVitlrthe wings ofthe lower pair of nuts 3 disposed at rightangles to the plane of the bail 1, they act as feet in carrying the vulca nizer elements 4, 5. The elements 1, 5, are provided with a pair of laterally projectingears each, each ear 6 having a slot 7 into which maybe laterally moved the arms 2. The inner ends of these slots '7 have'in the outer sides seats 8 with which the nuts 3 may interfit. The lower vulcanizer element 4 may have a convex face or seat 9 for receiving the object to be vulcanized, as an inner tube 10, held in position thereonby-the opposing vulcanizer elements. I
The element 5 has the plugs 11 for closing the vents or fuel filling holes 12 leading to the annular chamber 13. This burner chamber 18 has nested therein the asbestos wick l4 bound with copper wire 15, the windings of which wire assist in giving the wick form as well as aid in vaporizing the hydrocarbon fuel conducted upward by the wick from the measured charge of alcohol or gasolene thoroughly heat thiscentral member.

Centrally disposed as to the element 5 is the relatively independent vulcanizing member, shown as of circular form and mounted as a plug in the annular burner. This vul canizing member is provided with the vulcanizing face or seat 16 below the burner and opposing the seat 9 when the vulcanizer is used as in Fig. 1. In some instances the element 1 need-not be used as an opposing seat, for instance in the operation as disclosed in Fig. 2. About the face 16 are the threads 17 permitting interlocking engagement with the nut 18, insulated by the non- ,conducting packing 19 from the grooved underside of the burner element Further heat insulating packing 20 is between the threaded portion 17 and the element 5. nut 18 accordingly serves to maintain the ing member face 16 approximate a uniform seat, in the instance shown being concave in one direction only.
With the vulcanizing member in position in the burner, thetop outwardly extending flange 21 of the vulcanizing member provides an annular opening between itself and the element 5 into which the draft for the burner comes to support combustion. The
products of combustion from the annular burner pass through the openings 22 in the cylindrical portion 23 of the memberTfio e vulcanizing member serves as a fine for the burner, the gases entering the openings 22 passing out through the hole 24 in the top. With the vulcaniz'ing member formed of a good conducting material as metal, its temperature ma be very nicely controlled solely by the flame action of the burner. In the instance of the disclosure the conducting metal of the vulcanizing member is aluminum, making it readily responsive to all changes. Owing to the flare of the element 5 away from the vulcanizing member, there is with the packings 19, 20, complete metal insulation of the seat forming means or nut 18 from the heat source and the burning action is the direct controller of the temperature of the face 16.
The burner is efficient; in producing complete combustion of its entire charge in a cleanly manner, even in tilted positions, say as shown in Fig. 9 wherein the action of the flue is as effective as in Fig. 1. The bail 1 not only serves as a handle for conveniently carrying the device, but may act as a clamp in such various positionings of the vulcanizer for use as may be found desirable in practice.
The burner throughout is insulated from the vulcanizingmember, and the heating of the vulcanizing member is not from the burner receptacle, but from the products of combustion passing through the vulcanizing member as a flue for the burner. The intensity of the heating action upon the vulcanizing member is gaged by the design of the structure to attain superior results in effective vulcanizing b a temperature uniform throughout the treatment. tuation in the temperature of the fuel receptacle in the burner element 5 is local thereto and may in no wise work deleteriously because the member accomplishing the treating is independent therefrom and has its temperature controlled by combustion products which products insure uniform heating 7 throughout the treatment of the vuleamzmg member.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent 1s:

9. A vulcanizer embodying a clamping U bail in one piece, opposing vulcanizer elements each provided with seats for the arms of the bail, and on each arm an oppositely acting pair of adjusting nuts coacting with the bail and elements for bringing thevulcanizer into operative position.
10. Avulcanizer-embodying an integral U-bail having two threaded arms, oppositely acting pairs of adjusting nuts on the arms, and vulcanizing face providing elements coaeting with the arms of the bail and assembled on the bail by the nuts.
11. The combination in a vulcanizer of a burner providing a central seat and a heat conducting member removably mounted in the burner seat to be surrounded by the burner and provided with a heat imparting vulcanizing face centrally below the burner.
