DRINKING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, `JOHN M. B. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and `State of Virginia, have invented certain new parts throughout the same,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, 1s shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a drinking receptacle or bowl, the upper end of which is open, as shown.
.This bowl has its lower portion or bottom formed in the rear portion 11, which is inclined forwardly, to meet with a rearwardly inclined forward portion 12, which is curved in cross-section, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. Formed in the rear portion 11 is a depending inclined passage or pocket 13, which is substantially V-shaped in crosssection Aand increases in depth toward an outlet. The elevated end of this pocket terminates near or at the point of union of the forward and rear bottom portions 11 and 12. The passage or pocket 13, at one end, is provided with an outlet opening 14, discharging into a lateral tubular extension Specication of Letters Patent.

15 o f a. drain conduit 16. This lateral eX- tension l5, at its lower end, discharges into the conduit 16. The drain conduit 16 pro.- jects interiorly above the bottom portion 11, within the receptacle 10, forming an overflow conduit 17, the upper end of which determines the maximum water level of the drinking receptacle 10, as shown. It is thus apparent that the overflow water from the conduit 17 and the drain water from the passage or pocket 13, both preferably discharge through the drain conduit 16, which may be connected with a suitable pipe (not shown), discharging at a suitable point.
The numeral 18 designates a strainer element or plate, having apertures 19. It is obvious that other strainer material may be employed, such as wire gauze or the like. This strainer element or plate 18 is preferably arranged diagonally within one corner of the drinking receptacle 10, in advance of the drain outlet 14 and over-flow conduit 17, as shown. Qne end or edge of the strainer element or plate 18 is arranged behind a retaining lug 20 preferably cast upon the inner surface of the side wall of the drinking receptacle, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The strainer element or plate 18 extends across the drain passage or pocket 13, and is provided with an apertured extension 21, of a suitable shape and size for fitting within this passage or pocket. as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. , strainer element or plate 18 is provided with an imperforate plate 22, preferably formed integral therewith. This plate is preferably triangular, as shown in Fig. 1, to properly fit within the corner of the drinking receptacle. N
Arranged within the rear portion of the drinking receptacle 10 is a. water inlet con duit or valve casing 23, preferably vertically arranged with its upper discharge end disposed a substantial distance above the upper intake end of the over-flow conduit 17, as shown in Fig. 4. The conduit 23 has a. drain or weep port 23', as shown. The inlet conduit or valve casing 23 is preferably cast integral with the'bottom 11, and the lower portion thereof has an Lshaped port 25', discharging into the main bore thereof. Water is supplied to the port 25', by a pipe 24, through the medium of a couplingl 24. as ehown. A, bolt 26 has one end thereof extending into the port 25', and is adjustable therein, to control the volume of water passing therethrough.
The passage of the water through the port 25 is controlled or regulated by a valve 25, having connection with a rod 26, eX- tending upwardly through an aperture formed in a cap 27, carried by the inlet conduit 23. Though the inlet valve is shown within the drink receptacle, its location is not yintended to be limited to that location but may be placed anywhere 'Within the supply conduit or its connections outside of the drinking receptacle. The cap 27 is suitably spaced `from the upper end of the inlet conduit to permit of the discharge of the water therefrom, in a downwardly direction.
The numeral 28 designates a cover for the drinking receptacle 10 which may be advantageously provided at its forward end with an up-turned lip 29. The rear end of the cover is hinged to the receptacle 10, as shown at 30, for swinging movement in a vertical plane.
The opening 14 of the passage or pocket 13, is closed and opened by a vertically movable valve 31, the upperV end of which is tapered, as shown at 32. The valve 31 is shown in its lowermost position in Fig. 2, the opening 14 being open whereby the drinking receptacle is drained. When the valve is moved upwardly it closes the opening 14 whereby the receptacle is adapted to hold the water. The valve 31 is adapted to be suitably moved by an upstanding rod 33, connected therewith and having operative connection, as shown at 34, with the cover 28. The valve rod 26 is operatively connected with the cover 28, as 'shown at 35i The operation of the apparatus is as follows:
When the animal, such as a cow or horse, desires to drink, it engages the cover 28 with its muzzle and elevates the cover, thus gaining access to the interior of the drinkin re ceptacle 10. This upward movement o the cover 28 operates the valve 31, for shitting the same to the closed position, and simultaneously moves the valve 25, to the open position, whereby the water will pass from the discharge end of the inlet conduit 23 and be discharged into the drinking receptacle.
It is obvious that the strainer element or plate 18 and extension 21 serve as common means for protecting the drain passage or pocket 13 and the over-flow conduit 17, and preventing trash or the like from becoming clogged therein.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit raeaeee of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, ll claim:

, a drinking receptacle provided in its bottom with a drain outlet, an overflow conduit for the drinking receptacle arranged. near the drain outlet, a cover hinged to the drinking receptacle, an outlet valve for closing the drain outlet, an element connecting the valve and cover, an inlet conduit connected with the drinking receptacle, an inlet valve to control the passage of water through the inlet conduit into the drinkin receptacle and having an operative connection with the cover, and a strainer element arranged within the drinking receptacle near and in advance of the drain outlet, the overdow conduit, the outlet valve, and the connecting element of the outlet valve, to prevent foreign material passing into the drain outlet and overflow conduit and also serving as a guard for the outlet valve and its connecting ele ment, to prevent the animals mouth from contacting therewith.
2. ln apparatus of the character described, a drinking receptacle provided in its bottom with a drain outlet; an overflow conduit for the drinking receptacle arranged near the drain outlet; a cover hinged to the drinking receptacle; an outlet valve for closing the drain outlet; an element connecting the outlet valve and cover and extending within the receptacle; means operated by the movement of the cover to supply water into the drinking receptacle; and an approximately vertically arranged apertured plate disposed within the drinking receptacle near and in advance of the drain outlet, overHow conduit, outlet valve, and connecting element ot the outlet valve to prevent foreign material passing into the drain outlet and overdow conduit and also serving as a guard for the outlet valve and its connecting element, to prevent the animals mouth from contacting therewith.

In apparatus of the characterdescribed; a drinking receptacle provided in its bottom and near one corner thereof with ,a drain outlet; an overflow conduit arranged within said corner of the drinking receptacle; a cover hinged to the drinking receptacle; an outlet valve for the drain outlet; an element connecting the outlet valve and cover; means for. supplying water to the receptacle; and an apertured approximately vertical plate disposed obliquely in said corner of the receptacle, near andin advance of the drain outlet, the overflow conduit, the outlet valve, and the connecting element of the outlet valve, to prevent foreign material passing into the drain outlet and overflow conduit and also serving as a guard for the outlet valve and its connecting element, to prevent aeeaeee the animals mouth from contacting therewith.
