UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOSEPH WOODLEY, OF QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNCR TO WOODLEY HEEL AND SOLE CUTTING COMPANY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MODES OF CUTTING SOLES FROM SIDES OF LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,271, dated June 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH WOODLEY, of the city of Quebec, in the district of Quebec, in the Province of Quebec, boot and shoe manufacturer, have invented a novel Method of Cutting Shortened Soles from the Whole Hide or Side; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention consists in a novel method of cutting shortened soles from whole hides or sides, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, a plan view of a side of leather is represented, with lines indicating the manner of cutting the soles.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe my improved method.
a represents the side of leather from which the soles are to be cut. 1) represents the form of the sole which is shortened. It will be observed by cutting off the heel end. Its peculiarity consists in cutting the line of the heel, not in a straight line, but in a line curved to correspond with the toe of a sole, as indicated was cut, and the line of its ball with the line of the shank. In cutting up or down, the heel lines should touch the toe-lilies, or the opposite, in all cases; or, rather, they should extend to the space made vacant by the removal of the sole previously cut, as clearly shown in the drawing.
The toe-lines, it will be observed, project within the points of the heel a short distance, so thata portion of the heel-line is cut away, by which means about four per cent; of material is saved over the method of cutting the heel-lines straight across.
By means of my'improved method an entire hide can be economically out without waste, and without making it necessary that any part of the good stock shall be used for an inferior purpose.
I do not claim broadly a method of cutting shortened soles from awhole hide or side; but
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The described method of cutting soles, with the line of the toe projecting into the central portion only of the heelline, substantially as Witnesses:
J OHN L. SMALLEY, JAMES WOODLEY.
