To all'whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER F. TESCHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Apparatus, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to measuring apparatus and the object of the invention is to improve the construction of measuring apparatus in the manner to be hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings which accompany this specication and form a part hereof, which drawings illustrate an embodiment of this invention, and on which drawings the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts wherever they may appear in either of the views, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the apparatus; and
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showl ing parts in different positions.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a tank to which liquid is supplied by a pipe 2 and a valve 3. The valve 3 is controlled by the rod 4 and when the rod 4 is in its elevated position the flow of fluid to the tank is stopped. The tank has an outlet 5 and a discharge valve 6. A lever 7 fulcrumed on a pivot 8 is connected with the discharge valve 6 by a connection 9. The guide 10 for the stem of the discharge valve 6 serves as a stop to limit the upward movement of the inner end of the lever 7. A lioat 11, of any suitable size and construction, controls the quantity of fluid admitted to the tank and discharged therefrom, and, for illustrative purposes, is illustrated as guided by rectangular rod 12 secured in the tank. The float, as it rises in the tank,lifts the valve rod 4 to the position shown in dotted lines on Fig. 1 of the drawings and in full lines on Fig. 2 and shuts oii the flow of liquid to the tank. The lever 7 is provided with a latch 13 which is pivoted to the lever and provided with oppositely projecting hooks 14 and 15 and a lever arm 16. The faces of the hooks are beveled or inclined and a spring 17 normally holds the latch 13 in a position in which it rests against a stop 18 on the lever 7. The tank is provided with a catch 19 and a flexible member, a chain 20, for example is attached to the float, runs over an anti-friction pulley 21k and may be adjustably secured to the-lever 7 by being fastened to a pin 22.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows. As the liquid fills the tank, the oat 11 will raise the rod 4 until the said rod is in the position shown by dotted lines on Fig. 1 of the drawings. The valve 3 will then be closed so that liquid cannot enter the tank. When the outer end of the lever 7 is pulled down, its inner end will be raised opening valve 6, the hook 14 will pass over andengage with the catch 19 and the hook 15 will be lifted to rod 4. a stop, prevents rod 4 from being strained by a pull on the lever- 7. The liquid is now flowing out from the tank 1 and the float 11 is falling with the lowering of the water level in the tank as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings. When the slack in the flexible member 20 has been taken up, the weight of the float 11 is taken by the lever arm 16 on the latch 13 and swings the latch 13 to disengage the hook 15 from the rod 4 and the hook 14 from the catch 19. The rod 4 will fall admitting liquid into the tank and the inner end of the lever 7 will fall and the discharge valve 6 will close. -The spring 17 is weak enough so that the float 11, in lifting the rod 4 from the position shown in full lines to the position shown in dotted lines on Fig. 1 of the drawings, can move the lower end of the latch 13 to the right to permit the end of the rod 4 to pass up by the hook 15. The amount of liquid which is permitted to flow from the tank is regulated by the amount of slack in the flexible member 20 when the tank is full. The less slack allowed, the latch 13 will be tripped sooner and less liquid discharged. 'The wlore slack allowed, the latch 13 will be tripped later and more liquid discharged. The apparatus thus provides a constant volume tank, as far as the filling of the tank is concerned, and a variable and adjustable volume of discharge. When operating the apparatus, the outer end of the lever 7 should be pulled down as far as it will go and then left alone.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a tank of a valve for admitting liquid thereto, a float for closing said valve when the liquid has reached a fixed height in said tank, a discharge valve, a latch for holding the discharge valve open and the admission valve closed,
