SAM B. SMITH, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SWIMMING- GARMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAM R. SMITH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the city of Los Angeles,county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented certaiirnew and useful Improvements lIlfSWl I1'1 ming-Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to swimming: garments, and more. particularly to a garment, or vest, provid'ed'witli a plurality of pockets, attached thereto and adapted to receive'float elements, together with means for securing said vest or garment around the body of the user.
In the preferred form of my invention, I
have attached receiving pockets to said vest longitudinally thereof, whereby said pockets can be rocked or moved to such position relative to the body of the wearer, as will be most convenient and comfortable. By providing pockets into which float elements can be placed, one or more air containers, or float elements can be used, as desired.
In order tomore definitely explain my invention, I have illustrated one practical form thereof on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a swimming garment embodying my invention;
,Fig. 2 is a side view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal cross sectional view through one of the pockets showing its attachment to the garment proper.
Referring now more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates a garment or vest, open in front, with tie strings 2 and 3, at top and bottom, attached to one side of the vest, as at 4, l, and tied through rings 5, 5, attached to the opposite side of the vest, said strings preferably being tied in a bow knot as indicated, whereby they can be quickly tied or untied by the wearer himself. Attached to the rear and to the front of said vest, or garment, longitudinally thereof, I have shown four pockets 6, 6, attached, as by means of a seam at 7, to the body of the garment 1. In the present form, said pockets are shown to be cylindrical. By being attached, as at 7, they can be rocked to one side, or to the other, so as to be positioned most conveniently for the comfort of the wearer, whether man or woman. Caps or covers, 8, 8, are provided for said pockets, and so attached that they can be conven- Specification of Letters Patent.

iently raised to afford access to the pocket. Any suitable button or fastener, as at 9, may be used for holding said caps or covers closed. Inserted in the pockets, as here shown, are air containers, as 10, which may be made of tin, aluminium, or other suitable materials WVhile. I have shown hollow air containers as the float elements, it will be evident that other float elements which are not hollow may be used in the pockets. I
have also shown tie stringsll, attached to. the'garment, as at 12, and adapted to. be:
tied through a ring 13,011 the front of said garment, and across the pockets attached to the front thereof, whereby to hold said pockets and their float elements a in convenient and comfortable positions against the body of the wearer. This also forms a holding means for more securely holding the garment tightly around the body of the wearer.
In order to conveniently and quickly secure the lower edges of said garment, I have provided at opposite sides, at the front and rear thereof, tie strings 14, 14, which may be brought through the crotch and tied to rings 15, at opposite sides on the front of said garment, substantially as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 2.
I am aware that changes in details can be made in my invention as here illustrated, without departing from the spirit thereof, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. A swimming vest or the like, provided with float elements attached thereto and adapted to be rocked about their point of attachment to different positions relative to said vest for the comfort of the wearer, and means for securing the same in adjusted positions.
2. A swimming garment of the character referred to comprising a body provided with pockets, float elements inserted in said pockets, said pockets being so attached to said body that they can be rocked relative thereto, and means for holding said pockets in adjusted positions for the comfort of the wearer.
3. A swimming vest of the character re ferred to, provided with float elements at the back and front, extending longitudinally thereof, and adjusted to said vest at points in longitudinal alinement with each other,
whereby said floats can be rocked bodily from one side to the other relative to said line of attachment, and means for securing said vest to the wearer.
4. A swimming vest or open front, tie strings for securing the meeting edges together, float elements extending longitudinally of said vest and attached at points longitudinally of said garment, whereby to be rocked from one side to the other for adjustment purposes, and tie strings for tying said float elements in adjusted positions, substantially as described.
5. A swimming vest Or garment, provided at its meeting edges with securing means, and at its lower edges, front and back, with securing means adapted to be passed through the crotch for holding said garment down, float elements attached to said garment and adapted to be rocked thereon for adjustment for-the comfort of the wearer, and
the like, With an means for holding said float elements in ad- 7 justed positions, substantially as described.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 6. A swimming garment provided With a pocket attached thereto, and adapted to be rocked laterally on said garment, a float element inserted in said pocket, and means for tying said garment and float element in position. A
7 A swimming garment provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending pock-- ets, on the front and rear and attached to the exterior thereof, said pockets having a single line of attachment, air containers reinovably inserted in said pockets, and means for securing said garment and said float elements to the upper and lower portions of thebody, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, California, this 19th day of 'Jan- 40 nary, 1918.
