Description

7 nam CHARLES C. TOMKIN SON F PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB T0 J. EDWARD OGDEN, 0F MOUNTAINVILLE, NEW YORK.
DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
Application filed March 8, 1917. Serial No. 153,246.
, To all whom it may concern:
My invention relates to sectional doorswhich are elevated in opening and transfer a portion of the weight to an auxiliary support. Furthermore, it has special reference to large, heavy doors which are adapted for warehouses, pier sheds and the like.
One object of my invention is to equip a sectional door of the aforesaid character with a movable member, such as, for example, an
arm or lever which is adapted to be retracted when the door is closed and automatically moved into position to engage a bracket or other suitable auxiliary support when the door is in its open position.
Another object is to provide a folding door having a movable arm or other member which is adapted to be moved in response to the relative movement or folding action of the door sections into a position to engage a stationary bracket or other auxiliary support when the door is opened.
In order that my invention may be thoroughly understood 1 will now proceed to describe the same in the following specification, and then point out the novel features thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a door equipped with one embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, but showing the door in its open instead of in its closed position.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modified door structure which also embodies my invention. This is also a sectional elevation and corresponds to Fig. 2 except that the door is not com pletely opened.
In the drawings, designates a post and 11 the lintel of a door frame. The door comprises an upper section 12 hinge-connected above the lintel at 13, an intermediate section 14 connected by hinges 15 to the section 12and a sliding bottom section 16. My invention is equally applicable to two section doors and in fact is applicable to doors of various types.
In the arrangement shown the intermediate section 14 has guideways 17 in which the bottom section runs and the bottom section has rollers 18 or other projections which engage the door posts and may cooperate with guides (not shown) thereon in a well known manner.
Secured to the upper door section 12 is a bracket 20 on which a bell crank lever having arms 21 and 22 is pivotally mounted. The arm 21 of the bell crank lever has an extension 23 with which one end of a'spring 24 is connected. The other arm 22 has a roller or wheel 25 which is adapted to engage a suitable auxiliary support, such as the stationary bracket 26, which is suspended from ceiling beams 27 and may form part of the ceiling'st ructure. The hoisting mechanism for the door may be of the usual type and is designated 28.
A link 29 is pivotally connected at 30 to the intermediate door sectionld and is provided with a slot 31 near its opposite end which provides a lost motion connection between the link and the arm 21 of the bell crank lever. The other end of spring 24 is connected with this link 29 at 32. The arrangement of parts is such that when the door is shut, as shown in Fig. 1, the arm 21 is substantiall parallel to the plane of the door section 12, and when'the-door is opened the bell crank lever will be swung into the position illustrated'in Fig. 2, as soon as it is in position for its roller 25 to ride on top of the support 26 with the arm21sub'stantially perpendicular to the plane of the door section 12. e
In other words, the bell crank lever is swung by the link 29 relative to the door section when the doorsection is completely opened so that the roller arm is substantially parallel to the plane of the door section 12 and extends outwardly beyond the door section into engagement with the stationary support 25. t The lost motion provided by the slot 31 allows for an increase of the distance between the pivotal connection 30 and the pin on bell crank lever arm 21 during a part of the folding movement of the door sections,
yam
without pulling the arm 21 back, as the backward movement of the arm may be limited.
lhe door shown in Fig. 3 in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters, is pro vided with a bell crank lever 53 pivoted at as on the upper door section 12 (and connected to an arm which is mounted to slide in a bracket 36 near the bottom edge of the upper door section 12, 1
A roller 3? is mounted on the arm 85 near ts outer end which extends beyond the fracliet 36 and sf 38 is arrangel to rot act the es and hold the roller 3? clo to the bracket 38 except when the door is fully opened,
The complete closing of the section Acupon the section 122 actuates the downwardly extending arm 39 of the bell cranlr lever 33 and forces the arm outward in opposition to the spring 38. The roller 3? then rides onto the stationary support 26 and constitutes a simple ef ective means for trans- -fer-ring a part of the weight of? the door to the auxiliary support,
Various structural modifications may he eh'ected with n the spirit and scope of my invention, and r if nd only such limitations are indicated by the appended claims, What claim is:
l. A door adapted be elevated to open, a stationary supportadapted to sustain part of the weight of the door when open, and a relatively movable member mounted on the door and means for actuating said rnernher into position to engage said support when the door is opening and retracting said nieni when the door is closing.
A dc adapted to be elevated to open, an auxili Ly stationary support adaptedto sustain a of the weight of door ano a relatively movable menic e door and means for acr into a position to en- 5 ea port, by the move 136 in opening and re racting hy the movement of the door in closing,
3. I orisin sections adapted to he i l 1 1 opening, stationary pted sustain a part of the weig I e door when open, and a memher act d 'ito position to engage said relative movement between the d s in openii g and retracted in nd a relay support h the sections n the sections are 5. A door adapted to be elevated to open, a stationary support adapted to sustain a part of the weight of the door when open, and a lever pivotally connected to the door and arranged to be actuated by the movement of the door in opening, into position to extend beyond the door to cooperate with the support when the door is open.
6. A door comprising sections adapted to be folded and elevated in opening, a stationary support adapted to sustain a part of the weight of the door when open, and a lever I swings away from the door frame in opening, and a mechanical connection between the bell crank lever and another section of the door, arranged to turn the bell crank lever into position to engage said support when the door is opens in 8a A door comprising a pair of hinge-connected sections adaptedto be folded and elea ed in opening, stationary support adapted to sustain a part of the Weight of the door when open, and a member mounted on one of the sections their connected edges and connected to he actuated by the he oth section relative thereto, into on to engage said support.
9. A door comprising a pa of hinge-connected sections adapted he l ided and elevated in opening, a stationary support adapted to sustain a of the Weight of '5 e door when open, a hell crank lever mounted on one of the sections adjacent to their an actuating link ening swings the n; lever into position to engage said Ms. W.)
:13, A c i i a pair ofhinge-con nected sections adapted to be folded elevated in stationary support adapted to sustain oi the weight of door when o a bell crank lever sections acent to an actuating link connecting the bell cranl; lever with the other section, whereby the relative movement between the sectionsin opening swings hell crank lever into position to engage support; and means for retracting the i ll crank lever as the door is closed.
11, door comprising a pair of hinge-connested sections adapted to be folded elevated in opening, a stationary su port adapted to sustain a part of the weig it of the door when open, a bell crank lever mounted on one of the sections adjacent to their connected edges, an actuating link between the bell crank lever and the other section and comprising a lost motion connection, whereby the relative movement between the sections in opening swings the bell 39 crank lever into position to engage said support, and retracts the bell crank lever as the door is closed and a spring between said bell crank lever and said link.
12. A door adapted to be elevated to open, a stationary support adapted to sustain a part of the Weight of the door When open, an arm secured to the door and movable beyond the outer edge of the door when open, and a member adapted to fold as the door is opened and actuate the arm to engage said support. In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of March, 1917.
