CHARLES A. TOWVAR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-SAWING MACHINES.
' To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. TOWAR, of
Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wood-Sawing Machines; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved wood-sawing machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Like lettersrefer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in wood-sawing machines, so arranged as to elevate the wood thrown on the feed-table to the saw, and, after being sawn, to the pile at any desired height. The invention consists in a peculiar device for retaining the stick in place while being sawn, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents a bed-frame, to which is pivoted the saw and carrier-frame B. C G are standards, provided with pulleys or sheaves a, over which pass the cords or chains b, one end of each of which is secured to the saw-frame Band the opposite ends to the drums 0, one of which is fastened to each end of the shaft (1, and by these devices the rear end of the saw and carrier frame is elevated or lowered at will. When elevated it may be held by means of the ratchet and pawl 42. D is the main driving-shaft, and the belt (1 gives motion to the saw-shaft E, which is suitably journaled in the frame B. Another belt, h, from the main driving-shaft gives motion to the pulley Gr, sleeved on the counter-' shaft F, which is provided with a clutch, F, of the ordinary construction, which, when thrown into engagement, gives motion to said countershaft, upon the outer end of which is secured the pinion H, which meshes into and gives motion to the spur-wheel I, which is secured to the shaft J. Upon this shaft are fastened the pulleys K. At the lower or opposite end of the carrier-frame Bis journaled another shaft,
L, to which are secured the pulleys K. Passing around and over these pulleys K K are the endless chains M, which form the carrier. At suitable intervals there are secured the spurs N to the endless chains.
To the saw and carrier frame B are secured the standards 0, to which is journaled the rock-shaft P, to whichin turn is pivoted the frame Q. This frame is provided with the pulleys R R, over and around which passes the endless chain S. The devices described in this paragraph are employed to hold the stick in place while being sawn.
A saw-table, T, upon which to place the wood, is pivoted to the saw-frame B in such a manner that it may be folded against the machine when not in use.
The machine being constructed substantially as above described, is nowready for operation, and may be driven by any power. The stick to be cut is placed upon the saw-table, when the carrier in its rotation carries it to the saw U, the stick passing under the device hereinbefore described for holding it in place. After being cut the continued rotation of the carrier conveys the wood and throws it upon a pile, the rear end of the carrier being elevated to any desired height for that purpose. When not in use the carrier may be lowered, the saw-table folded, and the machine easily housed or moved away.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The devices for holding the wood to the saw, consisting of the standards 0, rock-shaft 1?, frame Q, pulleys R R, and endless chain S, arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. The combined saw and elevator frame 13 in a sawing-machine, when the same is pivoted to the bed-frame A and arranged to be raised and lowered, substantially in the manner described.
- CHAS. A. TOWAR.
