FREDERICK A. STAHL, F NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it'known that I, FRnnERrcK A. SrAHL,
a citizen ofthe United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York to whichzit appertains to tmake anduse the same. 1 `v Y i l This 4invention relates particularly to what are known as souvenir'toys', andthe object thereof is to provide va device of this class which is. designed vtoillustrate o r dem onstrate the Vexpression Over the top a further-obj ect being to provide a mechanical souvenir toy which. will. amuse and in.`
terest both young and old;V and with these and vother objects inview the invention consists of a deviceofthe classspecified, constructed and operatingas hereinafter de scribedandclaimed; v e
Thesinvention Yis -fully ydisclosed 'in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate'parts of my .improvement are designated by .suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure. lisa side view of my improved@ souvenir toy and showing .the lparts 1n their,
normal position; v l
Fig. 2 a .central verticalsectional .View of the device as shown in Fig. 1 and indicating the .parts in a different position .in dotted lines; and,
Fig. 3 a view similar to 2 showy ing only a portion of the parts and showing the same infulllines inthe position indi- In thev practice of my invention I provide a top-shaped `body which is made in the form of an ordinary top, and which may be composedy of any suitable material, and the body a is provided witha central cylindrical chamber a2 which opens throughl the topv of said body and extends, downwardly thereinto about two-thirds of the vertical dimensions thereof and `terminate in a flat bottom a3 below which is a tapered bore` atwhich opens through the tapered end a of the body a, and around the top of the chamber a2 isa collar or a provided in its inner walls with an annular groove a" into which is sprung an open spring ring b which forms an inwardly Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 15, 1918.
Application filed March 27.3, 1918. Serial No. 224,161. l
directed annular shoulder for the purpose hereinafter described.
y Within the chamber a2 is placed a spiral. spring c which is adapted to bear on the bottom a?" of said chamber, and placed in said chamber is a vertically movable ligure d mounted on a circular base or pedestal d2 having a downwardly directed and tapered pin d? adapted'toft in the tapered bore a4 andv to project slightly below the bottom of the body a as shown at d* when said figure is in its lowest position.
The ligure d, in the form of construction shown, is designed to represent a soldier and is provided with the representation .of a hat d5 which is really a part of saidgure and which is adapted to rest on the flange or rim' a6 of the body a when said figure is in its lowest position, and the ligure d is also provided in the construction shown with a gun d6.
In assembling these parts the spring c l,is first inserted into the chamber a2, after which the open ring b is passed up over the bottom part of the gure cl, after which said figure is inserted into saidV chamber with the base or pedestal @Zzrthereof resting on the spring c, after which the open spring ring b is passed into or secured in the groove in the collar or rim a6 of the body a, and this ring b is designed to hold the figure Z ,in the chamber a and prevent its removal therefrom.
. When the figure d is depressed within the chamber a2 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the spring c is compressed and the pin d3 is forced downwardly into the bore at lso that it will be held vtherein by friction Vand against the operation of the spring c, and the appearance of the device at this time will be that shown in Fig. 1, and if pressure be applied to the bottom Z4 of the pin I.
movement of said figure is limited by the base or pedestal d2 thereof striking the ring b, as clearly shown` in Fig. 3, and said ligure may be lreturned to the rposition shown in full lines in Fig. 2 by pressing on the top thereof and -forcing it downwardly into the chamber a2 and forcing the pin d into the bore :at so that said figure will be held 'in' *its depressed position .by fric-p.` tion between said pinoli and the walls of the bore a4 in the bottom of the body u.
5 of the body a nor to any particular design of the figure d, and said figure may be so able/.ligure placed in-fsaid Yehagrnbfergand having a tapered pin 4adapted t'o be forced downwardlythrough said bore and to frictionally My invention is not limited .to'the shape engagethewallsfthereof.
5. A toy of the class described, comprising 70 aV body having a vertical cylindrical chammade as to illustrate or represent any obberwtherein which opens upwardly and at ject, f;article,j device -or ,persornA andfvarieus other changes in and modifications,.pfthe... separate parts of the construction herein described..
