NUT-LOCKING DEVICE.
ISpecification of Letters Patent. Patented 0613. 15, 1918.
Application filed April 16,191.7. Serial No. 162,462.
To all 4whom t may concern:
Be it` known that I', HERMANUs Ti-roMAssnN, residing at Heelsum, near Arnhem, The Netherlands` have Ainvented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-'Locking Devices, of which the vfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in nut locking devices. i
- The object of the invention is to provide a nut locking device exceedingly simple in construction, besides being perfectly sure and effective in operation.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1, is a sectional view of a screw bolt with nut and nut lock constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2, shows a crossssection on line A-A in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are sectional views of two somewhat different embodiments of theinvention. Fig. 6, is a cross-section online B-B in Fig. 5.
In the device illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 indicates a bolt, and .2 a nut. From its right hand face the nut 2 has been eccentrically turned out to a certain depth so that'an thatvthe height of the threaded portion of the nutis normal for the size of bolt 1.
The nut lock consists of a sleeve 4 being provided with a smooth bore with a diameter equal to or only slightly exceeding the external diameter of the bolt 1. The left hand face of said sleeve is provided with an eccentric ring or collar 5 whose eccentricity may be the same as that of the ring 3, and Whose external diameter is slightly smaller than the internal diameter of the collar 3; this difference however should be less than four times the eccentricity ofthe collars. The right hand portion of the sleeve 4 has preferably the usual hexagonal form so that the lock may be turned by means of a spanner fitting the nut.
After the nut '2 has been screwed 0n the bolt 1 and spanned. the locking sleeve 4 is passed on the bolt so that the axes of the eccentric ring 3 are substantially parallel with those of the ring after which the latter is introduced lengthwise into the ring eccentric groove. and a collar or eccentric ring 3 1s formed,
the/depth of the eccentric. bore being such` 3. The locking sleeve 4 is now turned to the right, thereby getting jammed against the inner wall of the collar 3, so that the nut as well as the locking sleeve are firmly pressed against the bolt. This jamming action is still increased if the nut is turned to the left or when it tendsto work loose.
If it is desired to unscrew the nutthe locking sleeve needs simply be turned with 'tice lthatcvlindrical surfaces insure sufficient grip for positively preventing the nut from working loose. Reference is had to Fig. 3, showing an embodiment of the invention wherein the said surfaces are slightly conical. It will be readily understood that after the eccentric ring 5 has duly been introduced into the eccentric bore of the nut 2, and then turned a certain angular distance it is impossible for the sleeve 4 to be lengthwise withdrawn from the nut. also in case the coacting surfaces of the rings 3 y and 5 are not yet in gripping engagement.
Fig. 4 shows another device diering from that illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 only in that the eccentric ring or collar 7 of the locking sleeve 4 fits around instead of within the eccentric ring 6 of the nut 2. It is clear that the ring 6 needs not necessarily be threaded. and that it is neither essential that it exactly fits the bolt 1.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, the nut 2 is provided with an eccentric groove 8 and the locking sleeve-4 with an eccentric ring 9 fitting with some clearance within the groove 8 if the nut Q and the sleeve 4 have the correct position the one with respect to the other. The nut in this case may be considered as heing provided with two eccentric rings forming the walls of the groove 3. lt will be understood that for an effective operation of my improved nut locking device the ecccntricity of the rings or collars provided on the nut. and on the locking sleeve should hc comparativel)T very small. It is evident that various changes might out departing 'from the spirit andy-scopeoff my invention. lHence I do not'wsh torlim'it myself to the construction Aherein set forth, but consider myself entitled to `all 'such changes asfall within the spirit yand VScope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, 'I claim as new and desire tose'curefby Letters Patent 1. A device of the `character described Lincluding a. bo]t,"a` nut'inthreadedengagement with the bolt andhaving an eccentrcgroove in one face thereof, and a locking :Sleeve having a smoothbore equal to or. slightlyfexceeding the externaldiameter'ofi the .boltfand'v provided on `one of its 'faceslwith an eccen-- tric ring .adapted to coact 'with :.said -eccen- `tric groove V1n the. nut lto be 4.interlocked therewith and also lock the said: nut on .fthe bolt. l- A 2. A device of the .character describedinentricring tting wsithgsomefclearancevwith tel-locked therewith and :also .nut ontheabolt. y. e
3. VA 'nut .locking device zcompriSin'g-in combination, -the"bo1t-and ico-acting Sleeve red engagement with the abll't and'- `work :over :the threads, the :t-sidifcofffaeting shaving ifinterensignature.
