WILLIAM E. BLNKENSHIP, 0F CHIP, KENTUCKY.
SWITCH-LOCK.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. BLANK- ENSHIP, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Chip, in the county of Letcher and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Locks, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to electrical switches.
and more particularly to an improved means for locking the saine in a desired I position.
The primary object of my invention resides in the provision vof a novel and imknife blade type.
It is well known that in use of switches which are connected in a main line that repairs become necessary to the main line feeder and it has been found expedient to provide some means for preventing the closing of a switch connected to the main line so as to prevent injury to mechanics orlaborers working on the feeder, I therefore provide my invention for use in locking switches in open position, but it will be readily understood, that the position in which the switch is locked has very little bearing upon my invention and that the same has only been shown as locked open for the purpose of illustratingr one of its various uses.
With the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction` combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:- n
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a switch showing my improved locking meansl secured thereto,'the switch being shown in closed position;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking element which I provide in the pre-V ferred form of my invention; and X Fig. 4 is a. detail perspective view of a catch member which is used in the preferred form ot' my invention.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts tl'iroughout the various views of the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the drawing in which the preferred embodiment of @pacification of Letters Patent.

Applicationiled October 17, 1914. Serial No. 867,156.
my invention is illustrated, the numeral 1 indicates the base of a switch board or the like having circuit terminals 2 and 3 thereon electrically connected with the spaced apart switch terminals 4 and 5 respectively. A switch blade 6 is hingedly mounted in the circuit terminal 5 by means of the pin 7 as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 1, and said blade 6 being adapted to form an electrical circuit between the terminals 4 and 5 as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 1. As in the usual form of knife switch the terminal 5 comprises a pair of spaced apart ears 8 between which the blade 6 is disposed. The locking element which I desire to provide in this instance comprises a body portion 9 having one end thereof oifset as indicated at 10 and provided with a transverse opening 11, the said member 9 being secured adjacent the pivot point 7 as indicated to advantage in Fig. 1. The up er end of the member 9 is provided wit an enlarged housing portion. 12 which contains a lock of any approved type. An opening 13 is provided in the enlarged portion 12 to allow of insertion of a key. One of the walls of the enlarged portion 12 which contains the lock is provided with an opening 14, the object-of the same becoming apparent here# inafter. The member 9 is mounted upon the base 1 and secured to the upstanding lug 8 by means of a bolt 16, the said bolt 16 passing througha solid portion 17 disposed between the lugs 8, and having an o ening for the reception of the bolt 16 as in icatled to advantage in Fig. 1. The bolt 16 passes through the opening 11 in the oppositeI portion 10 of the member 9 and is secured therein by means of a nut 18 on the outer end of the bolt 16. The under surface of the blade 6 is rounded as shown at 19 to allow the blade to move freely.
Disposed upon the upper edge of' theA blade 6 and substantially intermediate its ends l provide a catch element which ccmprises a vbase 20 having a lug 21 extending u wardly` therefrom, said lug 21 being provided with a catch portion 22 for reception. in the openingr I4 of the enlarged portion l2 of the member 9 and is adapted for engagement with the lock contained in the said enlarged portion l2. The base 20 is secured in any suitable manner to the blade 6, but I have shown openings 23 provided in the saidbase. said openings 23 having screws or thc like 24 extending therethrough and adapted to Secure the `catch element to the blade 6. As shown through- 'out the drawings the catch element and the' 'loekV member 9 "are preferably"I'nad'e of insulating material so asto .prevent shock to/ a person unlocking the switch.
Fromthe above description taken 'in co'nnection `withthe accompanying drawings it .that this is not an absolute necessity and that I do not desire to Abe limited to this .is thought that a clearfand comprehensive understandi'n'gof my invention may be had `'audit is thought that. the `advantages of the vsame ywill ,be readilyappreciated by those `skilled inthe art. While the locking mecha- I nism used with'my improvedl switch has been illustrated. as formed of. some insulat .f
Iing material it. will bereadily understood I particular kind .of material. While lI'- have shown and described `my v:invention asypos- ,sessing .a peculiar, form and construct-ion it is desired that it be understood' that I may jmake ,such changes vin the detail structure ,thereof as ldo not. depart from'the spirit and scope of theinvention as claimed.
`Having thus described my invention what I yclaim ,and desire to secure by .Letters Pat' Cntvisi .In a devicebf the class described, the combination of a base having a switch' terminalA thereon,v saidv switch terminal *bein :bifurcatcd yto. form ears, said switch termi- V- i ,eener nal having a solid lower ybortion, a blade pivotally mounted'between said ears a lockingwelement formed of insulating material comprising an elongated body,y said body having an of-set'lower end, a bolt passing through the solid portion of the switch terminal and through-said 4lower end of said body; a nut -cailjiedI Vunon Said bolt. 'thus holding said body: in 'aY vertical position,
said body being spacedfrom the rear Surfaces of said'terminal, owing to the ofi-set -construction of the' lower end thereof, `and arr-enlarged `housing formed upon thefupper end of said body and extending beyond the front and rear sides thereof, thel forward u V surface of said housinbeing' in a' plane vin direct alinement with t e portion of the offset end which engages the solid portion of said switch terminal,I thespacebetween said off-setlendv and Said housing permitting freel Y movement of the bl'a de4 locking means car rled within said housmgnnd'a catch carried upon said bladewhereby saidcatch will be ing means when said blade
