can ARRESTING AND HOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 8, 1918.
Application filed February 26, 1918. Serial No. 219,287.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM BARBA- cLoUeH, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Gallup, in the county of McKinley and State of New Mexicm have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Arresting and Holding Devices of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to car stopping and holding mechanism and particularly to a device to be used at the bottom of mine shafts where cars are stopped and held temporarily prior to their being delivered to the hoisting cage of a mine.
An object of this invention is to provide novel means for checking the momentum and finally arresting the movement of a car, the said device having novel means for preventing undue shock and vibration owing to the braking action. p i
A further object of this invention is to provide means which might be termed a safety device to be brought into action in case the normal brake or arresting mechanism has proven ineffective and a still further object of the invention is to provide a confining gate to prevent the car from passing into a shaft prior to the descent of the cage so as to avoid accident.
With the foregoing and other objects in view. the invention consists in the details of construction. and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fu ly set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 illustrates an end view thereof;
Fig. 3 illustrates a horizontal section; and
Fig. 4- illnstrates a section on the line H of Fig. 1 with the end wall in elevation.
In these drawings, I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention, although it is to be understood that with respect to certain features. the construction may be modified within certain bounds and this is especially true with relation to the formation of the casing into which a mine ear'is run. The casing is here shown as being rectangular and the sides as comprising double headed rails 11 with a sheathing 12 and a lining 13 although as stated, this may be modified. The side linings 13 preferably project at one end of the casing-and are curved as at 1 1 to create an enlarged opening when the cars enter. The casing has sills 15 on which rails 16 are supported and guards 17 are provided to prevent disengagement of car wheels from the rails.
It is the purpose of the inventorto frictionally engage the sides of the car to break the momentum of the car as it enters the casing and finally to bring it to a stop within the casing prior to its being delivered to a lifting cage or ele ator. To that end; I provide a friction device which may be termed a door, the same comprising outer andinner face plates 18 and 19 respectively which incase a filler 20, preferably of wood. The facings may be secured to the filler in any appropriate way as by rivets 21 and the inner facingplate is secured to the side lining 13 by fastenings 22. The so-called gate is freeat one end to oscillate and it is held normally inward by a spring 23 whose outer end bears against a head 24 of a rod 25. The rod operates through an aperture 26 of a bracket 26 and the inner end of the rod is connected to an apertured lug 27 through the medium of a pintle 28 the said apertured lug being connected to the door.
Within the side frame of the casing, there is an aperture 29 for the reception of a screw 30 and the screw 30 is threaded in a bolt 31 held in the side frame so that the screw may move into and out of the casing and bear against the door to press it inwardly, the said inward pressure being against the ac tion of the spring 23 so that the door is prevented from swinging too far inwardly by the said spring. The purpose of the inventor is that the door should be in position to engage the side of a car coming into the casing and under normal conditions, the door would yield or spring from the point where the screw 30 engages it and there would be suflicient rigidity of the door to insure friction which would cause the car to brake or come to rest, it being understood that when the car was moved from the casing, the spring 23 would operate to prevent the door from swinging inward beyond the point that it had occupied prior to the entrance of the car.
The screw 30 has a hand wheel 31' by which it can be manipulated and a second screw 32 threaded a nut 33 near the exit end of the casing has a hand wheel-34 for formed by an extension-of the Sheathing. 12 and bending it on itself to provide'an interveningspace or eye 38 and the tapered pin is of a size to enter the eye and'bear against the link when it is in pos'ition't'o guard the end of the casing. By reason 'of the fact that the pin is. tapered, it can be readily dislodgedfroin the eyewithout backingth car from engagement with the, link as-it will only be I necessary to tap the lower end of the pin slightly to effect this dislodgmentj Asa means for guarding against accidents which might result by reason of'a carcoming into the casingv prior to the replacement of the linkzor buffer; '1 have provided a hinged yoke 391which may swing from the" position in which it is shown in Fig'.; 2 to a position at right angles thereto at the end of" the casing so that car will strike it if the link as stated is not inplace.
In the'present embodiment-cf the invention, the yoke is mounted 'on'the pivots 40 and L1 and it is provided-with a handle42 which may be manipulated by forcin'gthe handle upwardly to cause the yoke to swing outwardly across the end of the casing It will be observed from scription and from an inspection of the drawing that a number of meansare pro--' vided for safeguarding the movement of" cars and that-owlng to the presence of the screw 30, the gate maybe moved or adjusted to increase or diminish the frictional engage Copies of this patent may be obtained for'fivecents each, by addressing the(loihinis 'sioner of Patents,
in 37 which enters an eye 38 which eye 1n the present instance isthe foregoing dement of the door with a car; that the spring willlimit'the inward movement of the gate which will allow outward swinging move- 'inent thereo'fg' that the screw 32 may be brought into action to hold the gate rigid under"certain conditions but which under normal conditions would be threaded out so as to normally disengage the said gate.
The functions and purposes of the com bined' link-and buffer and of the car need not,
it is thought, be further" described in detail.
I claim- 1. Ina ca'r' arresting-and holding device a casing, a door having one end secured-tothe' casing and adapted to oscillate with rewherebya car beyond the said-point of engagementwillbe yieldingly held and means for *yieldingly-holdirig thedoor in positionf 2. In a ear arresting andholding device,
a casing a do'or having one end secured to lation'toa track, fiinsfor exerting Pres sure on the door lntermediate-its length,
the casing and adaptedto oscillatewith re-" lationto-a track, means for exerting pressure on the door intermediate its length, and
means for "exertingpressure on the door at a point opposite that-at which it is secured to the casing.
3. In a car arrestlng andholdingdevice;
a casing having a track therein, a door yieldingly held in' positiontojengagge a car-on the tra'ck,-a hinged bufi'er at the-end of the casing; a tapered pin engaging the link; and
meansassociated with the casingior holding the pin.
at. In a dararrestingand holding device, a casing ga yielding door secured tothecasing and adapted to-engage a car for braking itfa yoke, me'ans'for pivotally connecting the yoke at the sides of the "casing whereby it may swing across the end of the said casing-to arrest a car and a handle for operating the said yoke.
