1 represents the frame ol (he machine and 2 an inneiiiraine, which latter carries the various mechanisms and is removably sev cured in the main or outer ,frame by means of screws 3; A cylindrical platen l is located at the rea-r end of the frame 2. Key leviers 5 arefp *otally mounted on a rod or `shaft 6in the 'lower portion of the frame 2 and-their upturnvd front ends are pro; vided with' key buttons 7', ,whereby the li'eyboard of the machine is formed and exposed over` tlieopen front end of the main frame l. The key lovers 5 are provided 'on lheir upper edges with lugs S which normally bear agggahnst the cushion 9 'of a stopl bar llhthe letter being 'secured transversely in the flontprn'tion ofthe frame 2 and over said key levers. The key levers are also provided on their lower edges at points somewhat in front of their pivotal mountin'gs,
with lugs 12 whicli rest upon the cushion 13 oaf universal lbar 14.- i
A 4guide comb 15 is secured transversely in the lower portion of the frame 2 and re.
ceives the key Vlevers in proximity to `their pivotal mountings. The body portion of4 the fra me 2 :ind projecting somewhat above` `motion will be transmitted to the ke this comb (which `may depend somewhat below the bottoni edges of the inner frame 2) is made with a plurality of sockets 16. for the. accommodation of springs 17, the
front ends ol. which bear against shoulders 5'5 18 depending from the key levers for 1- taimngr the latter in and returning them to i their normal positions. The tension of these` springs and hence. the tension on the key` i levers, may beadjusted by means of screws 19 mounted in the body o'i' the comb 15 and receiving the rear ends of said springs.
The 1cey,levers 1 3 project; upwardly and rearwardly from their pivotal nionntings asindicated at 2O and are provided at their 635l rear ends with rounded heads 21 which enten I l'heslots of a comb 22 secured transversely in the inner frame 2. Bell lcrank levers-23y (corresponding in number to that of the ke levers) are mounted-on a transverse sha Q4 extendingfroln side to .side of the upper rear portion `ot' the inner :frame 2. The lower arms 253 of these levers project downwardly and somewhat ,lrn'n'ardly and are provided with bil'lirnated free ends which--7 enter the slots ol" the guide comb 22 and receive, `within said slots. the heeded rear ends of the key levers. lhenpper arms 26 of.' the bell-ernnl-zs '23 are ai'iproxilnatcly veuf tical in their normal piisitions ancpass 8.01 i
through the slots of an upper comb27 seL cured transversely to the upper portion o` the suine AThe comb 27 is provided at its respective. '18 y endr with upwardly projecting ears 281:0 e
which parallel :wins tlat respective ends `of to; more the same longitudinally andkiause their type faces to print on a paper sl py y passing between said type 'faces and flic` cylindrical platen ir-an inki-ng riblJon being of course alsofemploycd to-elfect the iff" v bare 5 impression of the type upon the paper. The tpe bars are guided. in their movements through the comb .30 and prevented from vertical displacement by means of a guide platel 82 (preferably steel) secured upon the comb 30. The comb 30, (as well also as the comb 27) will preferably be made of aluminmn, and to the comb 30, a wear plate (preferably of steel) o. the type bars is secured.
The various key buttons on the key levers are provided with certain letters ofthe alphabet and certain of said key buttons are intended also to represent numerals under certain conditions as hereinafter explained. The type bars with which the keys that may represent numerals are connected are pro-` vided each With two type faces 34, 35, one above the other,-the upper type faces representing certain letters of the alphabet and the lower type faces represcntin numerals. Each type face on each of said ey bars, is curved so as 'to be concentric 'with the face of the cylindrical platen fl, and the two type faces are located equidistant from the pivoted end of the key bar. When it is de sired to print numerals, it is move or shift the double-faced type bars upwardly on their pivotal supports'in order to bring the lower or numeral type face to printing alinement with the this operation is accomplished simultaneously with the manipulation ofthe key lever which moves a One construction of mechanism be employed to described.-
Between the rear row which may accomplish this, will now be of key buttons and the machinelcasing, a shift bar 36, is located and is preferably made of a length equal to the fullrwfidth of the key board. Depending ears 36! are provided at respective ends of the shift bar and to these ears, the rear ends of levers 37 are secured. These levers are pivotally mounted on the transverse rod vor shaft 6 on which the key levers are mounted and provided with lugs 37 toengage the cushion' 9. vEach lever 37 is provided with a" rearwardly projecting arm 38 and with dependinvr ears 39, the latter Inehts, or springs 39a mounted in the body of the comb 15,-said springs and their ad justable mountingbeing identical,` with the springs 17 and their mountings in the comb 15. The rear Vend of one of the lever arms 38 `ivotally connected with the lower arm ell-crank-lcver 40. This beli-crank is pivotally Inountedat 41 and its upper arm 42 is connected with one end of the type bar comb B0', through the medium of a pivotcd link 43 pivotally connected with-said comb at a point approximately in line with me heads of the type bars.
From the construction and 'arrangement forming abut 33 for the lower edges.
necessary toplaten and type bar toward the platen.
,time .combination with -nonib in front of the .dinallly movable through said comb, a
of parts above described, it will be apparent that when one ot the keys ntendedto represent a numeral as well as a letter and the shift liar ISH are depressed simultuncously, the (club 5U uill bc raised lo bring the lower number type tacos into printing position and the type bar corresperiding:r to the key which has been. dc} nessed will be moved lon gitudinally toward the platen to effect the printing of the numeral.
The pivoting ot the comb 30 not mits the shifting of the type bars to bring the numeral type faces in printing position, but said comb may be raised so that ready access may be had to all the type faces for cleaning them.
lVe donot claim herein the operating means for the pivoted comb carrying the type bars nor the construction of the type bars with two curved type faces equidistant from the pivotal support of the bars, such features bein covered in, our copending application Serial N o. 125,226.
Various sligl'xt changes might be made in the details of coi'istruction o our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence We do not Wish to restrict ourselves to the precise details herein set forth.
