Be it known that I, Gnonor. M. VVoLFn, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Maltby, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Educational Card Systems, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in educational card systems and has for its principal object to provide an im roved and novel system and arrangement 0 groups of cards to facilitate the teaching of such subjects as reading, spelling, arithmetic and grammar by a process of mechanically building words, sentences, numbers, problems, etc. A further object of my device is to provide a system in which the card bearing a certain common portion of a. group of words is arranged adjacent to the cards bearing the remaining portions of said groups of words, whereby the relationship of the common portions of groups of wor s to the remaining portions of such words may be mechanically shown.

Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the i'oilowing specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring more articularly to the draw ings, numeral 1 in icates a handle upon the to of which a cross barholder 2 15 secured. Tlih cross bar 2 is provided with a series of wire loops 3, upon which are swingably and removably mounted groups of

4 and 5. The groups 4; and 5 here illustrated are for word buildin and are arranged as shown in Fig. 1. 1% will be noted that group 4 is made up of a series of cards, having indexed cards arran ed in a predetermined order with the in exin and instructions for combining with car s of the grou 5, written upon the face of the card who is toward the o erator. It'will benoted that at the top 0 the card in group 4 which is shown facing the operator, the note indicates to the operator the phonogram which isdisplayed toward the pu ils; in the case inhand this phonogram is AID, andthe instructions so state. On the lower portion of the card are listed the index references to cards in group 5 which are to be combined rotatively with phonogram AID in order to build predetermined words. It will be noted in the case in hand that in the top of the second column on the card displayed in group 4, we find the reference 30-BR, and that upon looking in group 5, it will be noted that the next card displayed is 31, and it will follow that the previous card which has been turned over toward the pupils in order to build a word-with AID as an ending must be card 30. Upon examining card 30 which has been turned over, it will'be found to contain BR. I have now utilized the cards to build the word Blip-AID, BRAID. After the Word has been taught the pupils, the next card in group 5 to be turned over will becard 47 upon which is written ST, which makes the word STAID, STAID. It will be noted thatthe indexing on the cards in group 5 corresponds to the references listed on the cards of group 4. Oniy a portion of the complete word group is here shown in order to make the example as simple as possible. It-

Applicant wishes it understood that hehas perfected and used other grou s of cards as pointed out above having di erent connections from those shown and that the same have been used schools, by other teachers.

Whi e I have shown a particular form oil embo iment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is

In an educational card system, the combination of a plurality of correlated groups of cards the groups independently and swingably mounted adjacent to one another upon a holder; marginal monogram indexes upon the obverse side of each card of each group; characters upon the reverse side of each card of each group, the characters on the cards in one group being arranged to form pro-determined words with selected cards of the other groups, instructions upon the face of the cards of one of the said groups, said instructions referring to the characters upon the reverse side of the next previous card in the same group and to the characters upon the opposite sides of certain other cards in the other groups.
