LOCKING-TOOL FOR SHELL-SURFACE PLATES.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, PAUL D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking-Tools for Shell-Surface Plates, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool by means of which the sheet metal plate used for covering the end surface of a cast metal shell to close the holes or imperfections therein can be easily and quickly secured in place.
A further object is to provide a tool of simple construction and one which can be easily and quickly adjusted for use.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a shell in an upright position, illustrating the working position of the tool thereon,
Fig. 2 is a detail view, showing the parts ready for assembling,
Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the end of the shell, showing the plate in position to be secured therein,
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, showing the tool in position for securing the plate in the shell face,
F i 5 is a similar view, showing the positlon of the tool plunger when it has locked the plate on the shell.
In the drawing, 2 represents a shell of any suitable caliber, made of cast metal and having an end surface 3 in which it is desired to mount a sheet metal plate for the purpose of closing and covering any blow or air holes which might be in the end of the casing. In this end face a dove-tailed annular groove 4 is formed and encircled by this groove, resting on the face of the shell,
I place a sheet 5 of comparatively soft metal,
such as lead. Another sheet of metal 6, preferably copper, is placed over the sheet 5 and has a peripheral flange 7 which is insorted into the groove 4. 8 is a ring of suitable material, such as lead, that is fitted into the groove 4 outside the flange 7 and when pressure is applied to this lead ring its lower edge will spread and fill the dove- Specification of Letters Patent.

tailed groove and thereby lock the plates seal 7 I curely on the end of the shell. This con struction is common in work of this kind.
My invention relates to the improved tool or devlce for compresslng therlng and fore-j lower end in which the flattened end of the shell is seated, the inner surface of the easing being flush with the outer edge of the annular groove in the shell. Within this casing a plunger 11 is mounted and vertically slidable within an annular rib 12 that is formed in the surface of the casing. The under surface of this rib forms a stop for a shoulder 13 that is provided in the surface of the plunger 11 and the upper surface of said rib forms a seat for a suitable compression spring 14 interposed between said surface and a ring 15 that is mounted on the outer end of the plunger. The lower or inner end of the plunger has an annular recess 16 formed therein in which a ring 17, angular in cross section, is secured by suitable means, such as screws 18. This ring has a smooth outer face which slides vertically on the inner face of the lower portion of the casing. Within the ring 17 is a plunger disk 19 mounted on a stem 20 that is vertically slidable in the plunger 11 and has a head 21 at its outer end seated within a recess 22 in the end of the plunger 11. A spring 23 mounted on the stem 20 normally resists relative movement of the two plungers. A suitable means for operating the tool such as a hammer or plunger 24, is provided to contact with the outer end of the plunger 11 and force it downwardly against compression of the spring 14 to seat the plunger disk 19 on the surface of the metallic sheet on the end of the shell and engage the ring 17 with the ring 8, of lead or other suitable material, to force it into the dove-tailed annular groove and cause it to spread out therein and lock the sheet 6. This can all be accomplished with one stroke or movement of the plunger 24, the inner plunger disk gripping and holding the flat sheet of metal on the shell while the outer plunger upsets the ring 8 and locks the two sheet metal plates on the 7 ing a slreet metal plate'seated on'said shell andhavin'g a peripheral flange fitting vvithi'n" ceive the end of a shell and concentrically mounted, relatively movable plungers operating Within said" casing for j seating, and" looking a sheetnietalplatein the endof'the' shell.
'2. The combination, with a casing'having a seat therein to receive the end. of a. shell provided with an annular dove-tailedgroove therein, concentrically v inouiited plungers Within said casing, the inner plunger engagsaid groove and: the outer plunger: having means forupsettin'g soft 'meta'l ringfwitlf- 1 insaid groove to 100;];- said plate therein.-
3. A device of the class described COIH-' prising a casing having a seat for the end of a shell fitting. therein, said shell having, an annular dove-tailed groove formed inits' end and" a flanged" plat'e' fitting therein, plungers mounted one Withinthe other in said casing,
the inner plunger having a disk for seating said-sheet metal plate on said shell and holding it thereon, the outer plunger having a ring-' 'operating-between said plunger disk and said casing for engaging a soft metal locklng rlng and HPSBttlHgF-lUWlthlIhSitldi2H1 nular groovea r In Witness wVhereof: I have= hereunto set my hand this: 16thday ffMa h 19185.
