APPLICATION FILED JUNE [5 1917.

MAX C. BOSENFELD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAP FOB. BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
Application filed June 15, 1917. Serial No. 174,846.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, MAX C. RosENFnLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Caps for Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cap for bottles, the object of the invention being to provide a strong, cheap and durable device for the purpose set forth, which can be attached to the upper part of the neck of a bottle and folded over so as to cover the top of the neck of said bottle, said cap being formed of a blank which is so constructed that it may be wrapped around the neck of a bottle with its edges overlapping and having projections on its upper edge so shaped that they may be folded over the top of the neck of the bottle and fastened to the top of the bottle by means of adhesive material. The blank is also preferably slitted from that edge which forms the bottom of the cap when applied to the bottle neck, so that the portions of the blank between said slits may slightly overlap each other when applied to bottles in which the neck of the bottle is of smaller diameter than the head, the blank being so constructed that when it is folded upon the neck of the bottle, as hereinbefore set forth, it will present a smooth, neat appearance and no portion of the top of the neck of the bottle will be visible.
The blank from which the cap is formed may be of any suitable sheet material, preferably of paper which is ornamentally tinted upon its obverse side, different portions of which may be tinted of different colors or may have different designs thereon, and may be either plain or embossed, thus adding to the ornamental features of the same, the reverse side of the blank being preferably coated with adhesive material.
The invention consists in an improved article of manufacture, hereinafter described in the specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the bottle cap is formed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bottle cap attached to the neck of a bottle with the disk-shaped portion of the cap raised, the bottle being shown broken away.
Fig. 3 -is a perspective view, similar to Fig. 2, except that the disk-shaped portion of the cap is shown as attached to the folded portions of said cap.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is the blank from which the cap is formed, the same consisting of a body portion 6, the opposite ends 7 and 8 of which converge, the lower edge 9 being formed on a convex curve.
The upper edge of the blank 5 has a disk shaped projection 12 thereon midway between the opposite ends 7 and 8 of said blank. Said upper edge also has a plurality of V- shaped projections 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 arranged on opposite sides of said disk-shaped projection. The outer edge 20 of the V- shaped projection 15 intersects the edge 8 of the blank 5 and the outer edge 21 of the projection 19 intersects the-edge 22 of said blank from which it projects at a substantial di"- tance from the end 7. The projections 17 and 18 each have one concave edge 23 and 24., respectively, and one straight edge 25 and 26, respectively. It will be understood that the reverse face of the blank 5 is preferably coated with adhesive material.
The blank is provided with slits 27 ex tending transversely of said blank from its lower edge 9 and leaving portions 28 of said blank between said slits.
The blank is applied to the bottle neck as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 first by wrapping the blank around the bottle neck, with the apexes of the spaces between the V-shaped projections flush with the top of the neck of the bottle and with the end 8 overlapping the end 7, so that the points of intersection of the edge 20 and the end 8 and the edge 21 and edge 22 will coincide with each other. Where the head 29 of the bottle is larger than the portion 30 of the neck of said bottle, the portions 28 will slightly overlap each other, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The projections 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 are then folded inwardly as shown in Fig. 2. Due to the space on the edge 22 from the point of intersection of the edge 21 of the projection 19 to the end 7, it is obvious that the body portion 6 at one end thereof, viz, 8, may be folded over the other end 7 and the different projections folded inwardly over the top of the neck of the bottle and attached thereto and to the cork inclosed in said neck by means of the adhesive material referred to, without the projection 15 overlapping the projection 19, and this is the V-shaped projections, there will be 'no" inequalities caused by any of said J -shaped projections overlapping each other and'con sequently the cap Will present a neat, smooth appearance, asillustrated in Fig. 3; when it has been entirely attached to tlrebottle neck and to the cork inclosed Within said neck}. 7
Having thus described any invention; what I claim: and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
12 As an article of inann facture, a bottle cap blank comprising a piece of 5 sheet mate'- rial, one edge of which has a disk-shaped projection :th'ereon llilClWZLY between the op posite ends of said b l'anlt'and 'ofa diameter substantially equalto that of the top of the bottle to whiclrit is to beapplied,=' and a I plurality of 4 \r' sh'aped projections on said edge and on opposite sides- -of' said' d'iskshaped 1 projection; said blank being" slitted transversely thereof from the edge opposite thatnpon which said' projections are located;
2. an article of manufacture; abottle cap blank con'iprising-a piece of sheet material, one edge-of Whichhas a disk shaped p-roj ection' thereon midway between the" 0p:
menses vplurality of V-shaped projections on s'ai edge and on opposite sides of said diskshaped projection, the outer edge ofthe V- shaped'projection at one end o'f' said' blank 'in ter'sectirrgxthe" edge of that end of said blank and the outer edge of the projection adjacent to the other endof said blatflr irr- 4o tersectii'fg the edge of said b'lank frorn Which it projects at asubstantial 7 distance fro-In said other" e1'1" d, said; blank being slitted transversely thereof from the edge" opposite thatnp'on which said V-sh'aped projections are located; whereby said projections mayib'e folded over on the; top 'of abottle-to which said blank is attached With'0nt overlapping each" other and said disk may be folded over said v shape'd proj ections' to" cove'r-' the $511118, and the portions of said biank be tween said slits attached Ito 'th'eneclr of said bottle and" slightly overlapping each other.
