UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THoMAs sMITH, on NEW Yonx, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT |N WASTE-PIPE TRAPs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,077, dated June 18, 1872.
Specification describing anew and Improved WastePipe Trap, invented by THoMAs SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York.
My invention is an improvement in the construction of waste-pipe traps, designed to prevent the gusts of foul air or escape of noxious gases from sewers 5 and it consists in the arrangement of a valve in connection with a removable cover for the trap-box, and the provision of anges on the inner side of the box for the purpose of keeping the valve in an inclined position, all as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a plan view of a section of a waste-pipe with my improved trap. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line wav, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the waste-pipe. B is the box. C is the gate or valve, and D isv the cover. Said valve is hinged to the cover at E. The cover may be hinged to the pipe at one end and fastened at the other, or it may be bolted or screwed down all round, it being necessary to have it packed air and water tight. By this arrange ment the valve will be elevated or removed v downward, and thus facilitate the passage of water under it, and better prevent the air-gusts from blowing upward, I provide the inner sides of the box with inclined Ilanges H, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
I claim- 1. The hinged or removable cover D, having the valve G hinged thereto at E and applied to the box B, as shown and described, whereby the valve will be removed from the box whenever the cover is elevated, as set forth.
2. The inclined flanges H, in combination with the hinged valve C, for the purpose specilied.
