STOVEPIPE FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED- MAY 23. I916.

LEROY R. MILLER AND CHARLEY ELMER MILLER, 01? POPLAR BLUFF, MISSOURI.
STOVEPIPE-FASTENEB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEROY R. MILLER and OHARLEY E. MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Poplar Bluff, in the county of Butler and State of'Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to stove pipes, and more particularly to a fastener therefor, so designed to enable the clamping of the stove pipe within the opening of a chimney flue, and further enabling the pipe.
to be quickly and easily detached therefrom.
Tothis end, the invention consists of a thimble formed with an annular groove, a locking band seated within said groove, and means for retracting the said locking band within an annular groove formed in the in sertible section of the stove pipe, and thereby tightly clamping the band therearound, and firmly securing the latter in applied position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a chimney flue, showing the insertible section of a stove pipe connected therewith;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clamp ing band; and y Fig. 3 is a detail view illustratmg the application of the clamping band in clamping engagement with the insertible section of the stove pipe and in clamping engagement with the stove pipe thimble, the release position of the lever of the fastener being also indicated by dotted lines.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes a chimney flue provided with the usual circular opening 6 having inserted therein the stove pipe thimble 7. The said thimble 7 is constructed of sheet metal and has its outer end 8 bent to provide a laterally extending annular flange 9. The marginal edge of said'flange is curved outwardly and upon itself to provide the flange with an annular groove 10. When the thimble is inserted within the opening of the flue, the flange will abut the wall of the flue, and thereby limit the inser- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion ofthe thimble within the flue I have shown interposed between the flange 8 and the wall of the flue, a collar or band 11 preferably formed of asbestos and serving to an extent as a gasket. The character 12 designates the insertible section of a stove pipe provided with a pair'of annular beads 13 defining therebetween a groove 14;, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. Secured to the inner circumference of the thimble 7 in spaced circumferential series, are clamping arms 15 having inner hooked ends 16. As the insertible section 12 of the stove pipe is placed within the thimble, it will cause these arms to expand and contact with the inner circumference of the thimble and force the hooked ends thereof in clamping contact with the inner wall of the chimney flue, thereby positively retaining the thimble in clamping engagement with the opening of the chimney flue and preventing any accidental displacement of such thimble therefrom. a
In order that the insertible section 12 of the stove pipe may be easily and quickly deother link intermediate its ends and the other link serving as an operating lever for expanding and contracting said collar. Said collar is provided with a flange 24 having a bead 25 at its edge. The said head is placed within the groove 10 of the thimble and the extreme edge of the metal forming this groove is bent over to prevent the removal of the bead fromthe groove though permitting movement of said bead in the groove. 7
In using the device the thimble is placed within the flue with the collar in expanded position. The stove pipe is then inserted within the thimble and as the pipe passes through said thimble it will force the hooks 16 outwardly into engagement with the part of the chimney around the flue. The pipe is passed into the flue far enough to bring the groove 14 thereon in alinement with the the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and While v.I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such advantages may be made when desired as are Within the scopeof the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
p 1. A device of the class described conrprising, a thinible having a 'flange ,thereon provided with agroove,lockingarn1s carried by said 'thimble, a {split collar f having a flange thereonprovidedwith a; bead jfor engaging with said groove, andmeans ;for contracting and expanding said collar to clamp a Stovepipe.
2. A device of the class described comprising a thimble having a flange provided with a groove, locking arms provided with hooks ;earried by said thin1b1e,--a split collar having a flange provided With a bead for engaging said groove, a pair of links connecting the ends of said collar together, one of said linksbeing extended to'provide .an operating lever *jfor expanding and contractingsaid collar on a stove pipe, andthe metal formlngthe groove ontheflange of the thimble being bent over 'to secure the bead Within the groove.
In testimony whereof We afiix our signatures.
