Spe'cieation of `Letters Patent.
Application'led March 15, 1916. Serial No. 84,356.
v To all whom t may concern:
Be it lrnownflthat'l, COLIN MAoE'rrr, a
subject of the King ofL Grreaty Britain, re-
siding at Salford street, Aston, Birming-v ham, in thev county of \Varwick,lEn'gland,` havek invented certain new and useful'Improvements in or Relating to Pumps, of
which the following isa speciication.
' rl`h`is invention relates to pumps particularly those used for inflatinglpnuematic tires, the said pumps beingjof thekind in which the piston' is operated by toggleA members or `links *onev of Awhich forms a' and; to so vconstruct the". ump that kthe in' terior thereof is effectua lyV protected from also wheny the pumpis closed andout of use;
According to thisinvention,v the pump" comprises only three niovingparts',` viz. the
PSOH; an actuatinglever orf pedal,.- ,mdf a.. toggle' Enki which Parts Iare so constructed' and arranged vin combina-tion with a'spring that the length of the pump is muchless" than that! ofv pumps of the above kind hithertoemployed; while theeii'ciency ofY the pumpisincreased.'4 saidfspring normally maintains the said `parts `1n a' posi" tion in'which the' piston is -at4 the end Lo f its suction stroke, andthe lever-or'pedalraised,v
the delivery strokel off the piston being eiiectedfby depressing thev lever The toggle; li'nl-is pivotally connectedto-a stationaryportion of 'thefpun'ip andi is als'ol1 pivotally connected tothe foot lever-'while 'the latter is pivotally 'connected directlyfto the piston at a pointiwhich' neanthe forward -or delivery end of the' cylinder when the piston is at the end of its-deliv'eryf strol'e, -thereby avoiding the provision off additional parts such; *as a* long` piston 'rod-*- and guide links or van elongatedy piston andi cylinder las hitherto employed in certain forms ofy pumps ofthe abovefstated kind.- The por# tion of the actuating lever? which is con- Patentedct. 1, 1918.
nected,l to the piston extends through an Y opening in the cylinderk and lies between the pivotal points at the ends of the toggle link; the actuating lever is also so shaped as to constitute a protective cover which prevents the ingress of dirt and grit into the cylinder through the said opening therein when the pump is closedy andinoperative or during the working of the pump.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which l Figures 1 and 2 are respectivelyV a sectional elevation and a plan of one construction of the improvedpump in the closed or inoperative position.
Fig. 3Y is a similar view to Fig. 1 showing."V
the pumpv open with the parts in position ready 'to effect the delivery Y stroke of` the Y piston.
Fig. t is a sectional plan View of'a `portion of the pump taken approximately onV Fig; 5 isa cross-sectional viewv taken on the line of Fig. 1 looking.Y inV the direction of the arrows and drawn to a' larger scale.
provided Vwith a cup leather`patzliirig."bf` held in place by a plate b2.
the piston and d isfthe toggle member or l linlrwhich is pivotallyconnected to .the foot lever c and to a stationary part ofthe pump. A deliveryhead e carrying'a'delivery Vvalve e, a flexibleV connecting tube 62 and a pressure gage e3 is secured tothe forward end of the cylinder4 a; at the reark end ofthe' cylinderis secured a cover of closing piece f which is Vformed with a carrying lhandle f. The lower partof the deliveryAv head @and Y n p cviswthe'V actuating footleverwhich is pivotally connected to the carrying handle f are adaptedV toforrn'AV feet which support the pump cylinderaf in a horizontal positionv when in usel 1t will be seen that the cylinder a constitutes a frame or casing for the working parts so that" a separate supporting frame is not necessary as infoot pumps`A` hitherto employed. The cylinder a is provideclwitha semi-'circular opening a which as aforesaid the foot lever c and toggle link or member Z f in the raised i or open position shown in end of the foot lever is enlarged and pro-AV vided with serrations c2 to form good gripping surface for rtheoperatos boot and an upstanding rim or ledge c3 is formed at the forward end of the foot lover for the purpose vhereinafter mentioned. rlhe ytoggle link (l is in the forni of a rectangular Jr'ranie one end of which is pivotally connected to a lcross pin a2 fixed in the rear 'end of the cylinder while the Vopposite 'end is pivotally connected to a cross pin c secured Yto the inside of the foot lever c and the extension @"of the actuating leveris arranged Vto lie i' between the pivotal points at the ends of the toggle link (Z. A pair of tension springs g g connected to the piston and to the cover piece f as shown, tend to maintain the piston at the end of its suction stroke with rig. s.
When thefoot lever c is depressed bythe operators lfoot the toggle link CZ' and the foot lever c are straightened thereby torcl ing the piston forward against the tension of the aforesaid springs to' eiiect tliedelivery stroke. the foot'lever and the raising of the saine by the .action of the springs effect therev ciproc'ation of the piston.v
, It will be seen from F ig. 3 that the curved shape of the foot lever and the upstanding ridge o? formed on the lever shield the afore- V'said opening from dirt yand grit which might fall from the operators boot during the working'of the pump. A' pivoted catch 7L is provided on an extension of the cover,l ypiece 7 to retain the footlever c 4in the depressed position when the pump vis'not required for use. When the foot lever is retained in the depressed position it completely covers the opening'in the cylinder.r
Theproportioning of the togglelink or j member d and the foot lever c and the posi.-
tioning of their pivot pins enable a relatively large `movement of the piston Z9 when coin-` mencing its delivery stroke, tobe obtained by a smallinitial downward movement of the `toot lever and` toward the end of the delivery stroke a large downward movement of the foot lever produces a relatively small movement of the piston. The arrangement is also such that ,when the piston d reaches the end of its delivery stroke the foot lever and toggle link form (or approach the conthe piston.
rlhe alternate depression of f dition of) straightened toggle levers, much more nearly than is the case withfoot operated toggle pumps as heretofore made.
By disconnecting the foot lever c the pist0n can when necessary Vbe removed from the cylinderrthrough the aforesaid opening in the latter.
