To ZZ ywmm t may concern.' A y Be 1t known that Lemio T. Kenn, noire zen of the United States of Amer-ice, restreiing at Cleveland, inthe count e of Cuyahoga und Siete of Ohio, have 4inventer?. certain new and useful rnprovemene in onerere- Inserts, of which theiolowing is e specification. A
My invention reiines to improvements in Vconcrete insert, the objeetthereof beingrhe productionof a, very Simple and inexpensive -Inember adapted for embed chimeu in concrete structures forV Athe purpose ofi: supporting objects therefrom. i
With the development oi concrete buiic'iings, it has become necessary oempioy larg@ numbers of inserts, and thedesirebiiity of producing' Jche seme very eheepiyend oi uniform type, has reached the poinrI of renee demand throughoue the trede. Nnnieroue prior devices have been suggested and tried, but none with which I am ecqminhe.` involving the use of ensings or conipoeiie caer ings and eheet-meteri deveee depending upon 1he reinforcement ofi-he concree for support, nmy be as cheaply ninnuecuredos the article herein set forth, embocijf'ing my invention.
voreover, it is desirebe, if not neceeeerjy, that these inserts shell be uniform and detail, in order `cheb they may .interchangeably be used for supporting vveighe from the ceiinge-o" concree buildings, und the like. `Ai"cer considereble experiment, have found with the more obvious or ordinary inethod of forming inserts from sheet-V metal, which i'e the most economiceimethod known to m'e5 the nished prmiueiy uni`- form, eine 'particularly 'io 'the defer ine'ion resulting from stamping out the slot 1n the 'lower fece of the insert.V Again, have found that it is4 important to distribute the Weight over areas of concrete not 'lininediet-eig; engaged by nhebodyfof the insert and preferoby o greeter 'depth in the sieb, than is common in the ordine-r3? 'device upon the market.
Accordingly, hevecievise of een crete insert which may be economica.. stamped from a single piece of ehee; suitably bent en slotfefi to form. en open retaining compartment for the heini of the supporting boit orA other inernberineeriiecie therein. The eeveroi steps in the inanw facture and slottzng of thee simple riemen,

as opposed to attaching the insert to any of the reinforcement with 'the Concrete. Also desired depth within the concrete itself, hence my improved insert may be positioned wherever desirable or necessary within the concrete structure.
Moreover, the keyhole slot may be varied in shapeor size, to accommodate dierent types of supported members, but these'variable details do not pertain to my improvement and constitute mere modifications of tire structure herein shown and described.
lin Fig. 4, have shown the blank from which the insert may most readily be shaped. rlhis is struck fromsheet metal of any desired gage and the dotted lines indicate the keyholgJ punching and the 'bends respectively made in said blank. .()rdinarjv practice would include'the punching ofthe hey hole slot, but this l have found. to be very undesirable with sheet metal., even of moderately heavy gage, for the reason that the subsequent bending of the blank deforme the portions adjacent to the slot, andthe resulting product is n ot uniform.
In order to produce a uniform insert from the ears and connecting straps are respectively bent at right angles with each other and the latter at right angies with the bottom or lower face c of the insert. The top g also is' bent at right angles with the side picco f, while said side pieces are bentat right and obtuse bottom or lower face c of the structure, as best shown in the transverse sectional view, Fig. 5. The keyhole slot (Z is thenpunched in the lower face or bottoni of the insert, after which the side pieces are bent to form right angles with the bottom, asshown in Fig. :3. thereby bringing 'the top g into position for closing the box-like structure of the insert.
"It will be understood that in explaining the several steps of my improved method tions bent upwardly and angles with the renonce for manufacturing this insert, l do not desire to be understood as specifying that the parts shall. be bent at exact shall they form sharp angles, the one with the other, since this is not practicable with metal of relatively heavy gage, and I have shown the angles generally curved or rounded in the different figures of the drawings.

Having now described the preferred insert of my invention, and the preferred method for manufacturing the same, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. A. concrete' insert shaped from a single integral sheet-metal blank punched to form wide intermediate and narrow 4terminal members; said intermediate member being bent to form a chambered member closed at .its top and sides having its lower face slotted for receiving, inclosing and affording clearance for the bolt-head, supporting end members positioned to close said y,eharnbered member and extending above the same, and terminals bent angularly from said end members to afford support in an upper stratum of the concrete, substantially as set forth.
2. A concrete insert comprising an integral sheet metal 'blank punched to form terminal end portions and a wide intermediate body portion; said body portion having an opening or slot punched therein, side porthen horizontally to form atop for the resulting box-like body, and said end portions being bent vertically as uprights to close the ends of said body portion and afford supporting members eX tending above the same, substantially as set forth.
ln testimony whereof I aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
