Be it known that I, FRANK O. SAMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 5 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic Frames for Printing; on Metal, of which the following is asfieci cation.
his invention relates to improvements in photographic printing frames for printing on metal and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character by means of which prints maybe obtained from a plate, commonly designated as negatives, directly upon a sensitized metal plate for lithographing work, with the result that many of the operations heretofore necessary, such as the transferring operation in lithographing will be dis ensed with.
A u'rther object is, to provide an improved device of this character, having means whereby the negative and sensitized plate may be relatively shifted one with respect to the other, soithat a number of prints may be obtained from the same negative upon the sensitized plate without removing the negative from the frame.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists on the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrange ment of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention and in which:

the term negative will be used and it is to be'understood that such a ten'ir-when referring to the plate from which the print is made, is to be construed to be either a negative or a positive, according to the print which is to beobtained therefrom.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a suitable support, having walls 11, 12, rising therefrom. v
Arranged within the walls 11 and 12, is a frame designated gene-rally by the reference numeral 13, and this frame is provided with portions 14 which project through slots 15 in the walls 11, and are of a size and width as to fit snugly within the slots, so that when the frame is moved with respect to the walls 11, the portions 14 will act as guides for accurately holding the frame in its travel.
The frame is adapted to be moved or shifted with respect to the walls 11 in any suitable manner preferably by means of gears 16, which are connected with the frame 13 at opposite ends thereof and these gears are adapted to travel along racks 17 arranged in any suitable position with respect to the walls 11, so that when the gears 16 arerota'ted, the frame 13 will be shifted by reason of the gears rolling over the racks. These gears may be rotated in any suitable manner, such as by means of sprocket wheels '18, which are connected with the gears and over which sprocket wheels, a sprocket chain 19 passes. This sprocket chain also passes over suitable sprocket wheels 20 for guiding the chain and the chain may be operated by means of a suitable handle 21, connected wardly and forwardly with respect to the support according to the direction of rotation of the handle.
The-sensitized plate upon which the prmt is to be made is adapted to rest upon the support 10 such as at .22, and in order to cover the sensitized plate, or that portion over which the negative is not positioned, a su table flexible element'23 is providedwhich 1s adapted to encompass the support 10, with.

tremities of this flexible member are secured to the frame 13, so as to be detached therefrom by means of suitable securing devlces 26, so that one or the other of the ends of the ties of these rods 29 preferably project be rotated and this will cause the negative through the gears 16, 18 and beyond said gears, for the reception of a gear 30, whlch is secured to the rod for rotation therewith. If'desired both ends of the rod 29 may be provided with similar gears.
Mounted in any suitable manner, so as to travel with the frame 13 and also with the gears 30 that travel with the frame, is a master gear 31, to which is connected an operating handle 32, and intermediate gears 33 are provided between the master gear 31 and the gears 30 for operating the latter, so that when the gear 31 is actuated, the rods 29 will holder 27 to be shifted upon the frame 13 and in a direction transverse to the direction of shifting movement of the frame. Thus it will be seen that the negative holder 27 is bodily shiftable with the frame 13 when .the handle 21 is actuated and is shiftable relatively to the frame when the handle 32 is actuated.
A flexible member 34 also encompasses the support 10 to move in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the flexible member 23 and suitable guide rollers 35 may be provided over which the flexible member 34 passes. The extremities 36 ofgthis flexible member may be secured as at 37 to the negative holder 27. The function ofthis flexible member 34 is to engage the-sensitized plate between the walls of the frame work 13 so that when the negative holder 27 is shiftedfrom one position to another of the sensitized plate, the remaining\portion of the plate will be unexposed.
It will be manifest that by shifting the frame 13 and the negative holder 27 the negative may be moved to any desired posi-' tion with respect to the sensitized plate and as many prints ,may be obtained from the negative on the plate as is desired, without removing the negative. In order to insure the negative 38 standing in close proximity to the plate 22, any suitable means may be provided. A simple and eflicient means comprises adjusting screws 39 which pass through the wall of the negative holder, which latter rests upon the negative 38 and the negative in turn rests upon supporting shoulders 41 on the negative holder. Thus it will be seen that by adjusting the screws 39, the negative will be forced tightly against the sensitized plate.
Lifting devices 42 may be connected with the glass holder 40 to assist in removing the same from the negative holder.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the negative holder 43 remains stationary and the support .44 upon which the sensitized plate 22 rests is adapted to be adjusted first in one direction and then in a direction transversethereto so that the sensitized plate will be moved with respect to the negative. This may be accomplished in any suitable manner, such for instance by mounting the support 44 so that it will travel upon a base 45 in one direction when an operating screw threaded shaft 46, which engages threaded cars 47 is actuated by means of an operating handle 48. The

It'will thus be manifest that with this improved construction, a simple, durable and eflicient structure is produced and by the use of which a number of prints may be readily obtained from a single negative and the negative and sensitized plate will be relatively adjusted one with respect to the other to accomplish this end and at the same time ments 23, 24.
Obviously these flexible elements may be of any desired or suitable construction.
\Vhile the preferred forms of the invention have been herein shown and described,
it is to be understood that many changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is: v
-1. A device of the character described embodying means for holding a sensitized metallic sheet, a negative holder for holding the negative in close roximity to the sheet, said sensitized sheet eing of an area considerably greater than the area of the negative, means for relatively shifting the said sheet and the negative one with relation to the other, and automatically adjustable means for covering all of the sensitized sheet except the portion over which the negative stands.
2. A device of the character described embodyin means for holding a sensitized metallic sleet, a negative holder for holding the negative in close proximity to the sheet, said sensitized sheet being of an area considerably greater than the area of the negative, means for relatively shifting .the said sheet and the negative one with relation to the other, means for causing the negative and sheet to be pressed close toether, and automatically adjustable means or covering all of the sensitized sheet except the portion over which the negative stands.

whereby the shifting of the holder willcorrespondingly shift the last said flexible member, the latter extending across the support between the ends of the first recited flexible element, said flexiblemembers being adapted to extend over and cover the said plate, and
means emlbodying a gear and rack for shifting the said frame with relation to the support.

A machine of the character described embodying a support for holding a sensitized plate, slotted uprights projecting above the support, a frame having portions pro-- jecting into the slots to move therein when the frame is shifted, a flexible element encompassing the support and having its ends connected with the frame, a gear connected with the frame, a rack upon which the gear is adapted to move to shift the frame, means for rotating the gear, a negative holder movable upon the frame across the support and in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the frame thereacross, and a flexible} element encompassing the support and projecting between the ends of the first recited flexible member, the ends of the second said flexible member being connected with the 'said negative holder.
9. A machine of the character described,
embodying a support forholding a sensi- -the gear is adapted to move to shift the frame, means for rotating the gear, a negative holdermovable upon the frame across the support and in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the frame thereacross, a flexible element encompassing the support and projecting between the ends of the first recited flexible member, the ends of the second said flexible member being connected With the said negative holder, and means embodying a feed screw and operat- 'ing mechanism therefor for shifting the said holder in the frame.

A machine of the character described embodying a support for holding a sensitized plate, a plurality of shiftable frames mounted upon the support, said frames being bodily movable together back and forth over the support. in the same direction, one of said frames being shifta'ble across the support independently of the other frame and in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the other frame across the support, means for imparting such movements to the frames, flexlble elements individual to the frames and encom )assing the support, the ends of the fiexibie elements being secured to the respective frames and adapted to cover the plate, and means for holding a negative in one of the frames in close proximity to the said plate.
