PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. BYERS, OF DELTA, NEW YORK.
lMPROVEMENT IN GUN-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,015, dated June 18, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Gun-Lock, invented by JOHN J. BYERs, of Delta, in the county of Oneida and State of New York.
Figurel represents a side view of a gun-stock provided with my improved lock arrangement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line c c, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line k k, Fig. 1.

This invention relates to improvements in gun-locks, for the purpose of preventing accidental explosion by contact with the hammer, and of simplifying the general arrangement of parts. The invention consists principally in settingthe hammer in a recess of the gun-stock, and back of a guard which is fastened to the gun-stock, so that accidental contact with the hammer will thereby be prevented. The invention also consists in a consequent change in the position and form of the nipple, which is L-shaped; and also in a new manner of combining the trigger, hammer, and mainspring with each other, the trigger serving as catch for locking the hammer, as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents part of the stock of a fire-arm. B is portion of the barrel; G, the hammer; and D, the trigger. The stock is recessed at the side for the reception of the hammer, anda perforated guard, E, is secured over this recess to protect the hammer, as shown. The hammer can be easily cocked, as the openings through the guard E allow it to be conveniently reached, but it is by the guard entirely concealed, so that it is not likely to come in contact with outside objectsthe cause, at present, ot' many accidents. Being within the recess of the stock, the hammer is also protected from above for like purpose. F is the mainspring, whereby the hammer is forced against the nipple G. This nipple, in order to be reached by the hammer working in the recess of the stock, is made angular or L-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, the rst part, a, projecting outward from the barrel, and the next, b, backward from a. The mainspring F bears against a tumbler, d, that projects from the pivot e of the hammer. The trigger D is, by its spring f, held in contact with the notched portion of the tumbler d, and serves at once as a catch for holding the hammer cocked and half-cocked, and also as a trigger for releasing the hammer for firing.
By this arrangement the lock portion is made simpler than heretofore.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The gun-stock A, provided with a lateral recess in which the hammer is concealed and protected, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The guard E, applied over the recess in tlle lgun-stock to protect the hammer, as spec- 1 e( JOHN JAMES BYERS.
