- eras-DRIER.
To all who-m it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN KENNEDY residing at Pittsburgh. in'the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have;
invented a new and useful Improvement in (ias-Driers, of which the following is a;-full.
clear, and exactdescription, reference-being had to the aecompan ing drawings, f0I'll1- ing part of this speci cation, in which- 'Figure 1 is a vertical section of a gas drier embodying my invention, V
F1g. 2 15' a horizontal section SllOWlltQ' a on the plane of the irregular lin'e' 11- 11 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a mGdIfiCEk tlon; and
Fig. l is a sectional view of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. V My invention has relation to gas driers, and is more partlcularly designed for the .trcatment of blast furnace gases after the same have been cleaned by passing through the usual gas washers.
The object of my invention is toproyide a slmple and eihclent form of drier, in
which .the use of moving parts is obviated and which can be constructed and operated at a relatively small cost.
The nature of my invention will be bestunderstood by reference to the accompanying drawings. in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof and which willnow be described, it being premised,
however, that various changes can be made in the details of construction and arrange: ment of the various parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates a vertical casing supported at its base in a suitable framing 3. This casing may conveniently consist of sheet metal sections placed end to end and secured together by any suitable external joints, such as the external strips 4, riveted thereto, as shown in Fig. 4. The lower end of the casing is provided with a hopper section 5, having a discharge opening 6 at its bottom, and
which may be controlled by a suitable door or gate 7 l laced centrally within the casing is a vertical post or column 8, preferably hollow.
ported at. its lower end in a suitable spider 9, secured to the interior wall of the casmg Specification of Letters Patent.

and at its upper end is rigidly connected to a cover pla-te'10, which is removably secured to the casmgliead 11. Secured to this central post or column and winding around the 'same is a hellcal bafiie 12. The gas to be treated enters the upper portion of the easingabove the top portion of the baiiie, by
a suitable inlet connection, such as shown at 13, and the dried gas passes out of the lower portion of the casing by means of the outlet pipe 14. This pipe ispreferably extended through one side of the casing at an oblique angle, its lower end terminating centrally within the casing and a short distance .above the hopper section This lower end portion is preferably provided with a surrounding flange 15, placed at substantially right angles to the axis of this portion of the pipe and which serves as a deflector for water and flue dust which falls upon the pi e.-
H n practice, a battery of the 'driers may be arranged as shown in Fig.2,the several inlet connections 13' being connectedto a common gas supply main -(not shown) while lithe-outlet nipes 14 are connected into a common' mai ifold 16.
In order t'o keep the helical bailies clearof dust and dirt which may be deposited thereon from the gases being treated, I provide each of the driers with-a vertical series of -water jets 17, these jets extending into the casing through openings 18 at one side thereof.
It will be noted that the gas inlets m tangentially arranged, and this, to other with the helical arrangement of the 12, produces a whirling movement of the g through the drier. In this manner, excesaround these pipes""'downwardly' sive""ii1oisture is removed 'by""centrifugal I action, together 7 with" a considerable per centage of any fine flue dust which may,
main in the gases. This confiiih e dwater and a fine dust is discharged into the hopper section 5, from which it may be removed, as may be desired. By introducing water through the jet pipe 17 at intervals, the bafiles may be prevented from becoming clogged.
The baffles 12 may be conveniently formed of sheet metal riveted at their inner edges to the central'post orc'olumn 8, as indicated at 19 in Fig, 4, and having a reinforcing strip 20, secured to the underside of their outer portions. Preferably all the rivets which i the chamber betweeirthe baflie and the hopare employed have their heads countersunk in those surfaces with which the gas comes immediatel in contact and this, together with the absence of any internal joints in the casing. prevents all obstructions to the flow of gas through the drier.
Bv removing the bolts or other fastenings which secure the cover 10 to the casing head 11 and engaging a crane hook with the per- .t'orations :21, the central post. or column of the battle can be readil removed from within the casing. I
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, such removal is provided'for by making the easing in two sections "2 and 2", the section 2 being hinged to the Section 2", so that it can column and baflle.
It. will be noted that the arrangement of the gas outlet pipe is such that the gas which has passed the helical batiie and escaped into be swung open to permit the ren'ioval of the per portion 5 is caused to make a positive change in the direction of flow in order to enter the outlet pipe. This change in direction ot'fiow acts to cause the precipitation of a considerable percentage of moisture'and dirt which may still be contained in the gas.
I claim 1. A gas drier comprising a vertical casing having agas inlet at its upper portion, a
hopper-shaped lower portion provided with a dirt and water dis'ch extending within said closure and terminating at its lower end at a point above the said hopper portion, and a gas outlet pipe extending obliquely downwardly through the said hopper portion, and a gas outlet pipe extending obliquely downwardly through one side of-the easing at a point be tween the lower endof the battle and said hopper-shaped portion and having its open inlet end terminating above said hopper portion-, said outlet pipe having its portion thereof within the casing provided with a surrounding deflector flange, placed at substantially right angles to the axis of this portion of the pipe, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JULIAN KENNEDY.
