JAMES wrLEY.
Improvement in Brewers Casks.
Patented June 18, 1872.
ne een?. I
MMM@ 7 M/Z@ PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WILEY, OF ALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
lMPRovEMENT 1N BREWERS cAsKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,003', dated June 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WILEY, of the city and county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful article of manufacture, viz., a Cask for Brewers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a new article of manufacture, viz., a cast-iron cask constructed in two parts with the inner surface enameled, as hereinafter described, said parts being held together through the medium of iianges and bolts, with a suitable packing placed between the iianges, one end of the cask being provided with aman-hole and head.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my new article of manufacture,I will proceed to describe more fully its construction.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specification, Figure l is a side view of my improvement in cask for brewers. Fi g. 2 is a vertical and longitudinal section of the same'.
A and B represent the two parts of the cask, each being provided with a flange, C. The part A is provided with a man-hole, D, which is 'covered with a man-head, e, held and secured in position by means of bolts f. The part A is also provided with an opening, g, for a valve or stop-cock, which is used for the purpose of drawing oi the contentsof the cask,
' and also with an opening, h, which serves the purpose of a bung-hole for the cask. Having the parts A and B constructed, as described, their inner surfaces are cleaned by the action of diluted acids, and prepared in the mannerv usually adopted for preparing the interior of vessels, by the manufacturers of porcelain en# ameled hollow ware. After the inner surfaces of the parts A and B have been properly cleaned and prepared, said surfaces are provided with a coat of porcelain enamel. The method of providing the said surfaces with the enameled coating I leave to those skilled in the art of manufacturing porcelain enameled hollow ware, or other vcast-iron vessels. Having the parts A and B properly enameled,
they are secured together by means of the flanges G and bolt-s t', as shown in the accompanying drawing. Between the ilanges O is placed a thin packing-ring of gum, paper, leather, or other suitable material for the p'urpose of making the joint liquid-tight. The joint around the man-holeD should also be packed with a suitable packing, as above described. The exterior of the cask should be painted for the purpose of protecting the surface.
1 By Vconstructin g brewers7 casks as hereinbefore described, they will be found more durable and less expensive than the ordinary wooden cask now used. They may also be permanently arranged in the vaults, and cleaned without the trouble and expense of removing and replacing them, as is the case with those constructed of wood; and the expense of relining and recoopering is entirely avoided.
Another and a very important advantage of my improved cask over those constructed of wood consists in avoiding the undesirable chemical changes caused by the action of the liquor and gases upon the wood which they decompose, which, in combination with the elecrric and magnetic changes of the atmosphere upon the liquor often destroy the contents of the cask, or render them unfit for use.
Having thus described the construction and advantages of my new article of manufacture, what I claim as of my invention is- A new article of manufacture, viz.,'a castiron cask constructed in two parts, and secured together through the medium of flanges,
lbolts, and suitable packing, the interior of said cask being provided with a coat of porcelain enamel,77 substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
y JAMES WILEY.
