The press is provided with throw-oil? mechanism radapted to move the platen toward and away; from the 'form bed; thus enabling it to bermoved'out of the: path" of set screw 108 which extends into a slot 10 the form. and to prevent an impression from being taken. This throw-otf mechanism may be of any suitable character but that here shown is of the type shown and de scribed in the patent to Cartwright, No. 1,069,764, of August 12th, 1913. The mechanism of the throw-off forms no part of the present invention and it is sufiicient to note that it is provided with an operating handle 101 by means of which it is manipulated to impart movement to the platen. In order to automatically operate this throw-off I establish a connection between the handle 101 and a moving part of the press, such as one of the slide blocks 5, which carry the formbed. This connection is of such a character that when a sheet is fed to printing position the connection is inoperative and the throwoff mechanism is not actuated. However, when no sheet is fed to printing position the connection becomes operative and the mechanism is actuated. Preferably, the connection comprises two members slidably connected, with a stop adapted to be moved into and out of a position to interrupt the movement of one of the members and this stop is controlled by the paper which is being fed to the printing position. As here shown the connect-ion comprises a telescoping rod, one part, 102, of which is connected with the handle 101 and the other part, 103, of which is connected with a bracket 104 secured to the slide block 5 and has its inner end slidably mounted in the rod 102, which is tubular. The relation of the two parts of the rod is such that when unobstructed the part 103 is free to slide in the part 102,
throughout the movement of the slide block 5 and the form-bed. The tubular member 102, however is provided with a movabl stop, and, as here shown, has in one sid thereof an aperture 105 in which is slidably mounted a pin or stop 106. A boss 107 pro jects from the outer surface of the tubula member in alinement with the aperture anc cooperates therewith to form a guideway fo the pin 106. The boss is provided with L in the side of the pin 106 and serves t limit its movement. However, if a sheet is not fed across the end of the arm 112 the stop will remain in the path of the inner member 103 of the connecting rod and will thus form a rigid connection between the two parts of the device which will cause the operation of the throw-ofi mechanism. The inner member 103 of the actuating rod is provided within the outer member 102 of that rod with a lug or shoulder 115 which is arranged to cooperate with a lug 116 carried by the outer member. The two lugs are so arranged that when no movement has been imparted to the actuating bar as a whole, to operate the throw-off, the lug 116 will lie beyond the limit of movement of the lug 115. However, when the actuating bar has been operated to actuate the throwoff, the lug 116 will move toward the throwoff mechanism and upon the outward movement of the inner member 103, the lug 115 will engage the lug 116 and return the outer member 102 of the actuating bar to its normal position thus throwing on the impression. If desirerh'the inner member 103 may be provided with an extension 117 slidably mounted thereon and arranged to contact with the pin 106 and a cushioning spring 118 may be interposed between this extension and the body of the inner member, thus cushioning the contact between the two parts of the actuating device. Preferably, the pin 106 is provided at its upper end with an antifriction roller 113 to engage the arm and a spring 114. serves normally to move the pin downward. But the whole mechanism is carefully balanced so that it tcan be operated by the sheet as it is drawn from the pile. It will be obvious, however, 105

In a prlnting press, a printing couple, means for feeding paper to said printing couple, throw-off mechanism for one member of said printing couple, an actuating rod for said throw-ofi" mechanism comprising telescoping parts, one of which is connected with said throw-ofl' mechanism and the other of which is connected with a movable part of said press, a movable stop held normally in position to limit the movement of the last mentioned part of said rod toward the other part and thus cause said rod to move as a whole and to actuate said throw-ofi mechanism, the two parts of said rod having cooperating lugs adapted to be brought into engagement by the movement of the last mentioned part of said rod away from said first mentioned part thereof, to restore said throw-ofl mechanism to its normal position, and means actuated by the paper as it is fed to said printing couple to move said stop into an inoperative position and thus pre vent the operation of said throw-ofl" mechanism.

In a printing press, a printing couple, one member of which is movable toward and from the other, means for supporting a pile of sheets above said printingcouple, feeding mechanism to carry a sheet of paper from said pile into a printing position between the members of said printing couple, throw-oii' mechanism for one member of said printing couple, an actuating rod comprising overlapping parts connected respectively with said throw-oil? mechanism and with a movable part of said press,,a stop to limit the relative movement of the parts of said actuating device in one direction to cause said throw-off mechanism to be operated, an arm pivotally mounted above said actuating device and connected with said stop, a finger connected with said arm and having one end extending into position between said sheet supporting means and said printing couple, whereby said finger will be engaged by the sheet as it is fed from said pile to said printing couple and will be actuated to cause said stop to be moved into an inoperative position.
10. In a printing press, a printing couple comprising a normally fixed member and a member movable in a right line toward and from said fixed member, means for feeding paper to said printing couple, throw-off and actuate said throw-off mechanism, and
means actuated by the paper as it is fed to said printing couple to move said stop into an inoperative position, and thereby permit the one part of said rod to slide within the other part thereof without operating said throw-off mechanism.
11. In a printing press, a printing couple comprising a normally fixed member and a member movable in a right line toward and from said fixed member, means for feeding paper to said printing couple, throw-off mechanism for one member of said printing couple, an actuating rod for said throw-off mechanism comprislng two telescoping parts connected respectively with a movable member of said printing couple and with said throw-off mechanism, a stop movably mounted on one part of said rod and held normally in the path of the other part thereof to cause the two parts to move together and actuate said throw-off mechanism, means actuated by the paper as it is fed to said printing couple to move said stop into an inoperative position, and thereby permit the one part of said rod to slide within the other part thereof without operating said throw-off mechanism, and other stops carried by the two parts of said rods and arranged to be brought into operative engagement when the one part of said rod is moved EMERSON P.
