TRAFFIC-SIGNALING DEVICE.
gBeit;known that I, FRANK L. Burr, a
' citizen Qf Z-thGQUDltGCl. States, residing at intended to stop or to back the machine.
"Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State .ofKansas, have invented a new and useful .llraiiic-Signaling Device, "of which the following isa specificationm A invention relates to a signaling ,de-v
vices particularly-1.,designed for use upon 10 motor vehicles, one of its objects being to provide adevice of this character, which can be attachedreadily to the wind shield of an automobile and .which can beadj usted readily -to indicate the direction in which the vehicle is about to turn, and whether it is -A further object is to-provide simple and eflicient means for holdingthezsignaling device in any position to which it may be moved.
Anotherobject is to produce a signaling device which is cheap to manufacture, at-
tractive in appearance, and which will be instantly recognized as a trafiic signal by motorists following the machine to which it is attached.
Another object is to provide a combined signal device and mirror.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in' the preciseembodiment of-the invention herein disclosed, can be made 'within the'scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. -In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the signaling device, the same being shown by full and dotted lines, in several positions that may bel assumed thereby.
Fig. 2 is a plan view. 1
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section. V Fi; 4 is an elevation, of a portion of th 7 arm of the apparatus.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates anarm havin a jaw 2 at once end, and adjust-ably secured to 'this arm is a. clamping member 3 having a sp e'cification of Letters Pattie Patented Sept, 24, 1 918 Application filed. November 8, 1917. Serial N 0, 200,960.
justable angularl'yqthereom' is a rearwardly on the front face of a backing'plate 8. The stem -can be secured in any desired manner," as by means of a nut 9.
Extending through the middle portion i of the plate 8 is a stem 10 projecting from the disk-like base 11 of'an actuating-knob 12',
and mounted on thisstem is a coiled spring 13 one end of which bears against the plate" Swhile the other end thereof bears against a nut 14 threaded uponthe'stem and by means of which the tension can be regulated of the springv f Secured to the base 11 of the knob 12is metal shaped to appear like the forearm of a person with ahand extended therefrom.
Obviously the arm 15 and hand asat 16. r 16 can be suitably finished with paint or the like and, as shown, a mirror- 17 can be secured upon the back face ofthe arm 15 so that the driver can see machines approaching from the rear.
That end of the arm 15 adjacent the has 11 is concentric with the base and is lapped and retained by a finger 18 formed on the plate 8. The stem 10 is of course extended through the arm 15 and the spring 13 serves to hold the arm pressed firmly against the plate 8. 4 0
Formed in the plate or arm 15 at points equidistant from the stem 10 are apertures 19 any one of which is adapted to receive the pointed end of a plunger 20 which is slidabiy mounted in a recess 21 formed in the arm 7 and is normally pressed outwardly against the arm l5iby a spring 22 housed in the recess 21.
' The finger 18 constitutes an index and is adaptcdto indicate any one of a series of lettersprinted or otherwise displayed upon the back face of the arm or plate 15 close mentshown the letters employed are B, mdicann an intention to move backwardly,
L, indicating an intention to turn to the c to the rounded end thereof. In the arrangea and it will be apparent that by turning the arm 15 by means of the knob 12 so as to bring it to any one of the positions stated, the driverof. a machine-following will be able fully tounderstand in What direction the machine ahead will move. The spring pressed plunger will hold the arm 15 in any position to which it may be shifted but will yield to permit adjustment of the arm whenever the knob 12 is turned.
What is claimed is z 1. A signal device incl' ling a backing plate, means for attaching it to a supporting structure, a knob revolubly connected to the backing plate, a signal arm connected to the knob and havin a series of holes therein, yielding means or holdin' the arm pressed yieldingly against the backing plate, and a yieldable plunger normally projecting into one of the holes to maintain the signal arm inany position to which it may be ad-' 'justed.
2. A signaldevice including a backing ing means for pressin the arm against the I backing plate, a-yiel able plunger carried by the backing plate and normally projecting into one of the holes to maintain the signal arm in any position to Which it may be adjusted, and means on the arm andoooperating with the index to indicate the several positions of the arm.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my 0WI1,'I have hereto 'aflixed mys ignature in the presence of two witnesses.
