IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF 'SOLES AND HEELS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES FROM HIDES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,964, dated June 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DEDRIGK, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Articles from Hide; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and which illustrates my invention.
It is well known that soles and heels of boots and shoes are cut from leather, and that in this operation there are numerous cuttings which are thrown aside as waste.
If the pieces which are waste in the leather were cut from the hide they would not be subjected to the tanning operation, and consequently there would be just so much saved in tanning; besides this, such pieces, when untanned, are readily useful as glue pieces, a characteristic which they lose when converted into leather.
My invention consists in cutting from the hide the soles or heels, and subsequently subjecting them to the tanning process. By this invention the articles will be most thoroughly subjected to the tanning operation, and are more readily handled than the entire hide. The articles produced are of a superior quality. The Waste pieces from the hide remain untanned, so that there is saving both in labor March, 1872.
